Orchestra Nova

Orchestra Nova Newcastle's community orchestra: run by the community, for the community since 1991. We rehearse on Thursday evenings at Charlestown from 7:30pm-9:30pm.

Come and join us! 🎶 Orchestra Nova is Newcastle and the Hunter's community orchestra. It was originally formed in 1991 as the Novocastrian Arts Orchestra. Orchestra Nova continues to perform three to four concert seasons per year at Warners Bay Theatre and other venues, playing well-known popular and classical music for the community’s enjoyment.

Sound on! 🎧 The opening of The Void by Ash Hanna unfolds with an air of mystery. A solitary piano introduces the musical landscape, soon joined by the shimmering tones of the glockenspiel. As the haunting voice of the cello emerges, the melodies begin to intertwine, drawing listeners into a world that is both captivating and uncertain.

Performed by Orchestra Nova, The Void is a journey through colour, texture, and atmosphere — and this is just the beginning. ✨

Listen to some of the unique sounds of “The Void” by our very own Ash Hanna.
Stephen Aveling-Rowe describes how he feels about conducting this new work:

“At a time when the avant-garde has become largely cliché and post-modernity has created a void in the evolving musical landscape — one only partially filled by film scores — it delights me to see the emergence of composers and compositions that embrace melody, tonality, and harmony.
In this spirit, The Void embodies a sense of rhetorical tension and textural transformation that imbues the work with a sense of vivid expansiveness, perhaps even quest!”

Orchestra Nova will be presenting two of Ash’s original compositions alongside an incredible Australian work by composer Phillip Faddoul on Saturday July 4th at the Harold Lobb Hall, Newcastle.

Stay tuned for more on this!

Last week we enjoyed our first play-through of Gershwin’s iconic An American in Paris ✨🇫🇷

This piece is vibrant, cinematic, and full of personality, blending classical orchestral writing with jazz influences, giving it a unique energy and swagger.

It moves through sweeping romantic moments, bustling city rhythms, playful melodies, bluesy harmonies, and bursts of brass that sound like taxi horns cutting through the streets of Paris.

What makes it so engaging to play is the sense of atmosphere — it genuinely feels like a journey through a city, with all its glamour, chaos, charm, and wonder.

There’s still so much to uncover in the music, but the energy and colour are already shining through 🎶 and we look forward to performing this to you in our September 6 concert.

Rehearsals for Ash Hanna’s new orchestral work, The Void, are well underway — and we’re loving the intensity, colour, and sheer tonal depth emerging in the room.

Composed by one of our own violinists, The Void carries a powerful sense of momentum, moving through bold textures and moments of stillness that draw you into its unfolding story.

We can’t wait to share The Void with you at our July concert.

Composer Highlight 🎼 In our March 2026 concert, we were proud to perform the work of our conductor - Kevin Young.

Sharing his music with a live audience was a reminder of how fresh, engaging and distinctive contemporary Australian voices can be.

New Horizons is a work that reflects Kevin’s voice as a composer as well as his depth of experience as a music educator.

Originally written in 2015 and thoughtfully refined over the years (most recently in late 2025), the piece has evolved alongside the very journeys it represents.

New Horizons captures something we all recognise: the way life shifts as relationships grow and change, as new opportunities appear, and as we’re asked to step into the unknown time and time again. There’s energy, there’s reflection, and there’s a clear sense of moving forward.

Built from a single thematic idea, the music unfolds in three contrasting moods. A bold and optimistic opening, a more introspective middle, and a lighter, uplifting section that celebrates progress and possibility.

In the final moments, the theme returns, grounded and full of purpose, reminding us that through collaboration and shared effort, we can move beyond where we are and toward what’s next.

Thank you, Kevin, for sharing your music with us. 🎶.
