ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Dolly Mills Petyarre paints the Yam Flower, and across these four works you can watch it change with the seasons. The largest is a wash of turquoise, lilac, red and yellow moving right across the canvas. Another is soft pinks and reds with green and yellow coming through. One is deep greens and blues with flashes of red and pink running through it. The last is red and coral with blue and white scattered underneath.

Dolly paints from above, the way the country is held in memory, so the flowering vines spread out across the whole surface and reach the edges. The flowers appear after rain and show where the yams are growing underground, and the yam has long been an important food for the people of Alhalkere country. Dolly is the sister of the late Greeny Purvis Petyarre, niece of Emily Kame Kngwarreye, and mother of Jeannie Mills Pwerle.

Each painting is signed by Dolly, purchased directly from her, and sold with our gallery certificate of authenticity.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Janet Golder Kngwarreye | Five Works | Ref: JG361, JG303, JG324, JG478, JG213

Five paintings. One artist. And honestly, you would not know they came from the same hand if you didn't look twice.

Janet Golder Kngwarreye is Anmatyerre, from Utopia. Her grandmothers are two of Utopia's most beloved painters, Polly Ngale and Angelina Pwerle. Through the Anmatyerre kinship system, she is also connected to the legendary Emily Kame Kngwarreye, a relationship that carries the full weight of family in Anmatyerre culture, bound by shared Country, shared Dreaming and shared law.
Art runs through every branch of her family. Janet has been painting since she was young, watching the women around her work, learning the stories and Dreamings that are hers by birthright.

What these five works shows is the full range of what she carries. Two Awelye paintings bring the women of Utopia to life in ceremony — figures dancing, body paint gleaming, the movement of law on canvas. The Awelye Body Paint is something else entirely: deep purple and burnt orange, abstract and rhythmic, pure pattern. Then the two Yam Flower paintings — one a sweeping multicoloured fan of layered arcs, the other a swirling mosaic of teal and yellow shades that pulls you in like a current. Same artist. Same Country. Completely different worlds.

Caroline Ward Nakamarra | Walla Walla | 155.5 x 135.5 cm | Ref:CWN516

Walla Walla is a rockhole out in Pintupi country, northwest of Kintore and towards the Western Australian border. Water holds in that rock long after the sandhills around it have dried off. Caroline has painted it from above, squared forms of fine white dots sitting inside one another on a deep red ground, running right out to the edge of the linen. She has signed the painting on the back and written the story there in her own hand. Sold with our gallery certificate of authenticity.

Coral and cobalt blue on a black background. The coral is what catches you first, bright against the black, and the cobalt sits behind it and builds the depth underneath. Every leaf is one stroke of the brush, layered across the canvas so it reads like the leaves are still moving. Ningura Napurrula Gibson | Women's Ceremony | 43cm x 73.5cm | Ref:NNG514

There is a rhythm in this one that is hard to look away from. Cream lines run the full height of the canvas in dense parallel bands, folding back on themselves in long sweeping curves, with deep black forms scattered down both sides and a bold red ground burning through the gaps. It is the ceremonial design language of Pintupi women, and Ningura painted it with real physical weight, layer over layer.

She was one of the great senior women of Papunya Tula, the only Western Desert woman chosen to paint the ceiling of the Musée du quai Branly in Paris, and her work sits in the National Gallery of Australia and every major state gallery.

Every so often a canvas arrives that stops us in the doorway, and this is one. Polly has worked yellow ochre, pink and fuchsia through cream and white, dot laid over dot on a black ground built up in layer after layer. Stand close and it is fruit, seed and flower. Step back and the black keeps pulling through and the whole surface shimmers like country under heat. Signed by Polly and sold with our gallery certificate of authenticity.

Rosemary Pitjara Petyarre | Bush Medicine Leaves | 89 x 72 cm | Ref:RP511

This one stopped us in our tracks. Leaves in teal, violet and hot pink move right across a deep black ground, layer over layer, so the whole canvas feels like it is drifting. The purple is iridescent, and as you walk past the painting the colour lifts and shifts with you, cool one moment and warm the next. Up close you can see every stroke laid down with a loaded brush, the pink catching the light along the edges. Rosemary has signed the back and it comes with our gallery certificate of authenticity.

Stop and look at this one for a moment and the whole surface starts to move. Violet has built it from hundreds of curved strokes in deep ochre red, warm gold and soft peach, layered ring upon ring across black linen until the pattern turns like the markings on the back of the Mountain Devil Lizard she is custodian of. It is her largest work with us and close to square, so it will hold a wall beautifully either way you hang it. Signed by Violet and sold with our gallery certificate of authenticity.
