🚂 National Volunteers Week 2026 🚂

Volunteers truly are the lifeblood of the railway ❤️

The Castlemaine & Maldon Railway Preservation Society who are the operator of the Victorian Goldfields Railway celebrates their 50th Birthday this year!

For all of those 50 years, it has only been possible due to the dedication and continued support of volunteers.

From restoring carriages and maintaining steam locomotives, to welcoming passengers aboard with a smile, our volunteers are the heart and soul behind this iconic regional experience. None of it would have been possible without their passion, hard work and commitment over the past five decades.

We’d like to extend an enormous thankyou to all of our volunteers for all of their hard work and dedication over the past 50 years, we’re looking forward to the next 50! 🎉🚂

This years theme for National Volunteer Week is “Your Year To Volunteer”, so if you're interested in becoming part of the VGR family. We’re always looking for new volunteers, with opportunities to suit all interests and skill levels. Learn new skills, meet great people and help preserve living history for future generations.

🔥❄️ ALL ABOARD FOR A MAGICAL WINTER SOLSTICE EXPERIENCE! ❄️🔥

Step into the glow of steam, firelight and full moon magic this Winter Solstice as you journey through the darkness aboard a heritage steam train to the historic town of Maldon! 🚂🌕

Departing Castlemaine after dark, your unforgettable evening begins with a cosy train ride through the crisp winter air — grab a drink from the onboard bar, settle in and soak up the atmosphere as the steam locomotive powers through the night.

Arriving in Maldon, friendly locals will guide you to the Maldon Machinery Museum where roaring bonfires, live music, delicious food & drink stalls and festive winter vibes await! 🔥🎶🍷

But the magic doesn’t stop there… ✨

On the return journey, the train will pause at Muckleford for a spectacular “listening stop” — step out into the cold night air and witness the steam train disappearing into the ironbark forest before dramatically returning through the darkness with whistles echoing, steam rising and the full moon lighting the scene.
