Presented by the Castlemaine Art Museum, the Len Fox Painting Award is a biennial acquisitive painting prize and is awarded to a living Australian artist to commemorate the life and work of Emanuel Phillips Fox (1865–1915), the uncle of Len Fox, partner of benefactor Mona Fox. The Len Fox Painting Award and generous acquisitive cash prize of $50,000 is funded through a bequest from Mona Fox.

The Len Fox Painting Award recognises and promotes the work of Australian artists pursuing the artistic interests and qualities of E. P. Fox. These include engagement with colour and light; ambitious connections with international developments in art; and an interest in travel and an engagement with the cultures of diverse regions and peoples.

The Len Fox Painting Award will be made to a painting judged to have addressed the interests of E. P. Fox as an imaginative, inquisitive, and worldly artist. Any style or genre is eligible; however, it is recognised that E. P. Fox is most noted for landscape, figurative and portrait paintings. The painting may be made in any medium, subject to declared practical limitations. This is an acquisitive award, with the winning work becoming part of the Museum’s Art Collection.

Sampler Sewing with Holly Simpson

Saturday, July 4 11.30am - 1.30pm
Castlemaine Art Museum

Learn traditional mending techniques!

This workshop invites you to explore the marvellous world of mending with Holly Simpson, from Pins and Needles Studio in Castlemaine. We will delve into the traditional techniques of ‘Plain Sewing’ which is the foundation for all making and mending in needlework. By learning just a few easy stitches we create a vast world of possibilities to keep our clothing and textiles in circulation while making them uniquely our own. Along with self expression we also shift our behaviour towards conservation and care for what we already have, our planet needs us to change our ways after years of overconsumption and planned obsolescence. If we all start to thread a needle we can quietly drive meaningful change for our futures.

You will begin a mending ‘sampler’, a scarf of four squares, each square hosting an exploration of patching and/or darning. Inspired by work in the CAM archive, this sampler is designed for you to learn and practice your sewing skills using foundational styles trusted for hundreds of years. Once you have your foundation you will be well equipped to explore and expand your own mending style.

Holly will guide you through each of the techniques and offer support as you go, fostering a space for gentle conversation, connection and sharing your own stories of sewing and mending.
