It seems that the Tumin currency in Mexico is a common and sad tale, where local currencies are shut down by National banks despite the fact that they are successfully achieving their aims to lift local economies and those in need… because they are not taxed.

The town of Espinal in Southwest Mexico uses its own currency, the tumin, as well as the peso. Some say this boosts the local economy.

Economic resilience through diversity - complimentary currencies are like an insurance policy for the economy, buffeting local regions and communities from global market forces and monetary shocks.

This is one of the rationales for founding Caribcoin, a complementary currency that is just taking off.

“CCs buffer local economies from global shocks as they can be deployed to boost economic activity
when the financial system is unstable and in the Caribbean’s case foreign currency is scarce. Given
the region’s multidimensional vulnerabilities (e.g. susceptibility to de-risking and financial crises
originating in the US, natural disasters, public health emergencies), CCs are particularly beneficial for
building resilience in Caribbean economies.”

In this fabuloulsy far reaching speech on the dangers of unfettered Ai, Stephen Fry (quoting Daniel Dennett) likens the Ai to money, as the two most powerful and foundational human inventions, each requiring intense and globally coordinated regulation. What do you think?

“Well, Daniel Dennett the American philosopher, sadly recently dead, made I think a much more convincing comparison. Ai should be compared, he said, not to the printed word, not to nuclear weapons, not to the internet, not to the car or radio or any other technology of that kind, but to a much older and more foundational and transformative human invention, the agreed control over which no one questions — not the leftmost dirigiste liberal nor the rightmost laissez-faire libertarian. That invention is money. Even Russia and China participate in the global use and regulation of cash and currencies. We all punish the coiners of fake money as severely as possible, the counterfeiters. Dirty money, laundered money, whole national and global agencies have risen to fight that alone. If we relaxed our vigilance over money the world as we know it would collapse.”
