In 1986, designer Bruce Filley was making furniture at home when he heard about Melbourne Fringe on the radio, and wondered if it could include a furniture show. Fringe Furniture was born, and Filley wanted it to “step on toes, break rules and have fun.”

Forty years on, it’s become Design Fringe, but it’s still a place to test bold ideas outside the commercial mainstream.

This weekend, Forty Years of Design Fringe brings pieces from past exhibitions back together at RMIT.
