Five decades of Australian art music

Since 1969, La Mama Theatre has provided a vital space for music, sound and ideas that don’t fit the pub or the concert hall. As well as the hundreds of artists who’ve collaborated on productions as composers, sound designers and performers, Melbourne’s home for independent theatre has supported a curated concert series showcasing boundary-pushing artists, and amplifying ideas that deserve to be heard.

It was a beautiful, contemplative atmosphere on Monday night at for the premiere of Callum Mintzis’ QUIET AIR. We live-streamed up to 4000 km away, sending a little ripple from Wurundjeri Country all the way to Wardandi land on the coast of WA!

The opening set by Lawrence Folvig drew the audience in, with gently shifting waves and textures deftly exploiting the sonics of the baritone guitar and FX.

After a quick interval to finish the pot of mulled wine, the string quintet took to the stage, with explaining the origins of the piece during his travels overseas. Callum’s honest appreciation for the musicians, and in particular long-time collaborator Theo Carbo, was clear to all.

Isabel Hede and Natalie Mavridis (violins), Anthony Chataway (viola) & Hamish Jamieson (cello), breathed as one, in a shared tone colour which expanded and contracted around Theo Carbo’s guitar and electronics. QUIET AIR is a the perfect name for the feeling in the room that this work produced - a sense of calm and peace that is so needed in these times.

It’s such a privilege to support new music at La Mama, and open up our lovely courthouse for these explorations.

Already 2 weeks since this beautiful night at La Mama Theatre, with Amos Roach and guest trumpeter Thien Pham. Amos shared music from his Six Seasons of Gariwerd, the combination of his masterful yidaki and clapping sticks a perfect foil for Thien Pham’s effortless melodies. Amos rounded out the program with songs he’s shared with his family, telling the story of his mum Ruby Hunter’s custom guitar and how it found its way back to him. The audience was drawn in by Amos’ passion for music as a healing energy, as torrential rain poured down outside. This is why we Musica 🖤 💛 ♥️

Monday night's performance of Maps for Losing Oneself was a peak experience - one of those concerts that "you had to be there" for. Two masters of their craft, Nick Tsiavos (contrabass) and Jim Atkins (sound design) created a sumptuous sound world that will linger in the memories of the audience. Thank you for sharing your artistry with us at La Mama! 🤍

Five decades of Australian art music

Since 1967, La Mama Theatre has provided a vital space for ideas that don’t fit the pub or the concert hall.

As well as the hundreds of artists who’ve collaborated on productions as composers, sound designers and performers, Melbourne’s home for independent theatre has also provided an alternate live music venue: a curated monthly concert series showcasing boundary-pushing artists, and amplifying ideas that deserve to be heard.
