READ | Art Springs Eternal – The Kuprilya Project

Lisa Slade tells the story of how, in the early 1930s, artists came together to bring water to the drought-stricken community of Ntaria/Hermannsburg — home to Albert Namatjira.

Dr Lisa Slade is the Hugh Ramsay Chair in Australian Art History at the University of Melbourne.

Fellow senior woman Kunmanara (Nellie Ngampa) Coulthard was also a project leader, encouraging and guiding the younger women’s’ contributions to the painting. Other contributors include Beverly Brumby, Judith Walkabout, Kaylene Whiskey, Priscilla Singer, Raylene Walatinna, and Rosalind Tjanyari.

Now showing at Ngura Puḻka – Epic Country.
