Aplocheilus lineatus - female wild type

Couple of photos of females after the fish settled after 6-7 hrs in the tank. Male is good at running away when I get close to the tank so so far no good photos to post, but soon I’ll get him I am sure.

These fish are heterozygous for the gold mutation (Golden Wonder/Gold Panchax). These F1 fish had a ‘wild type’ male and a gold female as parents.

All going well I’ll be able to get F2 and beyond.
My first priority is going to be to get a ‘wild type’ line going.

Inevitability if breeding is successful I will also get Gold mutation individuals. If time allows I will retain some of these, as these ‘Gold’ individuals will be not as in**ed compared to some Golden Wonder/Gold Panchax strains available commercially.

Fish keeping network is the best! 😊

Aplocheilus lineatus

I have been looking for leads for wild type Aplocheilus lineatus, the fish that is familiar to most people with it’s cultivated form the ‘Golden Wonder’ or simply ‘Gold Panchax’.

It is a pretty fish but I also like the wild forms of species and like to work with them if I can find them.

So the hunt for ‘wild form’ of Aplocheilus lineatus had begun. I got a strong lead from my mate Morris Mohanan Minchiyathu that he knows someone that have them. He got me in contact.

I had a chat with Adam, and he informed me that the fish he have are wild form but they are heterozygous for the gold mutation. He only managed to find one male and had to breed him to Gold mutation females. He said he is happy to send me what he has left as he is short on time to focus on them at the moment.

Long story longer; today I received a box with 5 adult ‘wild type’ Aplocheilus lineatus 😬 The fish were expertly packed and shipped by Finn and team at Atlas Aquarium. All 5 fish made it nice and comfortably from sunny Queensland down to cold Canberra with the addition of a heat pack.

When your local aquarium store is run by hobbyists if they are able to and have the time they help you to support and susstain the fishkeeping hobby. Atlas Aquarium helped Adam out with shipping the fish to me, and I am grateful 🙏

Now the goal is to settle the fish and all going well to breed them. I received 1 male and 4 females and all going well we will get another generation out of these.

Thank you Adam for the fish, thank you Morris for getting me onto Adam, thank you Atlas Aquarium for helping out with the shipping!

Have I told you before that I love this hobby? 😊

Fundulopanchax nigerianum P82 eggs eyed up and started hatching.

If you like to watch the fry breaking free off the egg shell/membrane have a look at this short video I posted: https://youtube.com/shorts/qVRGkntXSwk?si=UNQQhqmUUthTzJaz

Eggs were collected off acrylic yarn mops, incubated over peat. Once eyed up the eggs were transferred to water. Within 30 minutes good number of fry had hatched already

Fundulopanchax nigerianum P82

This is a variety of nigerianum that is being bred by some of the Asian fish farms. As I mentioned in a previous post I got some recently.

I have been collecting eggs and started incubating them on wet/moist peat.

As you can see in the photo, it makes it very easy to notice infertile or dead eggs as they start to fungus. Separated eggs then prevents fungus moving onto healthy eggs. Fungused egg is then removed to prevent it releasing extra spores into the container.

Incubating container that I use typically have around a cm of peat and a lid. To prepare the container I place the pre boiled peat in the container. Then add water to fully cover and submerge the peat. After a day, pour the water off the container by tilting it gently and slowly to try to not disturb the settled and packed peat.
At this stage you can’t pour off all the excess water off without disturbing the peat layer too much. So I only pour as much of the water as I can then I leave the container with its lid off the have the excess water to evaporate for a few days. After the excess water is gone the container is ready to receive eggs.

Don’t forget to label your container.

Swapping Fish

Aphyosemion striatum OUT
Aplocheilus parvus IN

One of the things advanced hobbiest do fairly often, is to swap fish with other hobbiests, due to having been around for a while and have formed friendships and networks with people who are also in the hobby. I have swapped fish, eggs, live food cultures and many other fish keeping related stuff with friends.

Recently had an opportunity to swap some fish with a friend who live around 7-8hrs drive away.

Some great fish friends were doing a road trip to celebrate a great fish keeping legend’s life. It provided an opportunity for me to send some Aphyosemion striatum and in return received some Aplocheilus parvus.

The fish travelled well both directions, my thanks and gratitude to Glenn for the swap, and Andy and Peter for being fish couriers 😊

Aplocheilus parvus was a fish I wanted to keep in the fishroom for a while, so I am over the moon.

When wild caught Aplocheilus parvus were imported a while ago I got some but lost all but one within a short period. These are F1s from that same shipment. I still have the single male wild A.parvus in my tanks.

For those that might not be familiar with them, A.parvus is a small Asian killifish that is found in Sri Lanka and parts of India close to Sri Lanka.

It is one of the ‘Pygmy’ species growing to roughly to male guppy size, give or take.

No more new fish rule does not apply to Killifish! 😬

Thanks to my friends at Beyond Aquariums I got some new killies from Aquarium Industries

First bag is nigerianum P82. A nice robust fish, I thought so should keep and breed these again.

Second bag bivittatum Wild. As with all bivittatum in trade these are biateniatum, and I got them expecting that. If these are actually wild caught they are very different looking to previous wild caught biateniatum AI imported which were collected in and around Agbowa. These in the bag look like collected around Lagos, or mislabeled and were captive bred. I am trying to find out more information now. Regardless, very nice fish that I am glad I got.

Third bag is just normal gardneri. I occasionally like to get gardneri from wholesalers to see if by chance they might be different. These are not but very nice fish anyway.

I also have to thank the Aquarium Industries fish picker 🙏 Each bag had 4 males and 2 females, that works very well for me.

OK! No more new fish!!! Unless they are killifish 😬

Me: No more side quests! No more side quests! I am just going to breed what’s in the fishroom already.

A good friend: Do you want some black rams?

Me: Well, it would be rude to say no… 😬
