Today is the 1st of March and 47th year of Mardi Gras.
Mardi Gras started as a protest. It was and will always be a protest.
I am here this year as my fourth time marching. I’m also 32 weeks pregnant. A lot would find this idea a bit loopy to put my body through this. Luckily I’m generally having a healthy pregnancy so I’m not too concerned and taking necessary precautions.
I couldn’t face not marching this year and not protesting in my own way about the severe decline in LGBTQIA+ rights and in particular severe increase in Trans attacks, discrimination, dehumanisation, human rights violations internationally and slowly creeping into Australia too.
The daily unspeakable dehumanising and policies aimed at erasure of trans people in the USA is an extreme injustice to all our trans friends and family worldwide and a threat to everyone’s liberties and way of life. You see it already with book bans and censorship, attacks on female athletes, erasure of diversity equity and inclusion for all minority groups, and so much more.
We have to stand up for our trans family and friends and our shared humanity. The time to do this was many yesterdays ago. The way to do this is no longer polite or fear of ruffling feathers or upsetting people.
We must protest, fight, push back, stand up.
We must fight for a better world for us and our children. I hope one day my baby will know that I tried to advocate for a better world for him.
Reach out to your trans friends and family every day to show your support and remember, Mardi Gras is a protest for equal rights.
