Canberra Dance Theatre - CDT

Canberra Dance Theatre - CDT Leading community dance in Canberra since 1978. Book your class: bookeo.com/canberradancetheatre

Canberra Dance Theatre (CDT) has a history of connecting professional dance art with community dance. It grew out of the National University Dance Ensemble (NUDE), established by Graham Farquhar in 1972, which in 1977 was under the leadership of Diana Shohet, Lorna Marshall and Graham Farquhar. In 1978 a new organisation was created, Canberra Dance Ensemble, with Stephanie Burridge joining the art

istic team. With the departure of Diana and Lorna later that year, Stephanie took on the leadership role, being named the first Artistic Director. CDE was incorporated in 1981, and in 1989 the name was changed to Canberra Dance Theatre to serve a wider and more theatrical vision. Since the beginning CDT has brought together significant Australian dancers, choreographers, musicians and designers, including Dr Stephanie Burridge, Dr Elizabeth Cameron Dalman OAM, Kai Tai Chan, Julia Cotton, Patrick Harding-Irmer, Anca Frankenhauser, Beth Shelton, Anna Smith, Dr Cheryl Stock OAM, Andris Toppe, Wendy Wallace, Bernadette Walong, Graeme Watson, Tammi Gissell, Sue Healey and Amalia Horden.

Come along to our MID-WINTER SHOWING

Even though life for CDT is not normal right now we wanted to have our winter
show and share our love of dance with the community.

It will be a low-key affair, but filled with wonderful dances and incredible dancers!

It's free and will be over in time for you to go home and raise a toast to CDT's resilience over dinner!

We'd love to see you there

with deep thanks to Gorman Arts Centre and Quantum Leap Dance Australia for all the support. You've made our recovery possible!

We have an update on the studio repairs.

It's not what we hoped for, but we are well looked after in our new homes with Gorman Arts Centre and Ainslie Arts Centre. All our classes are settled in and doing what they do best - dancing!

Don't be shy, our teachers know how to support all types of dancers, and can give adjustments as you start or continue your dance journey.

A huge thanks and shout out to Gorman Arts Centre Gorman Arts Centre Ainslie Arts Centre and https://www.facebook.com/StMargaretsUnitingChurchHackettACT for your amazing support and help with getting us set up in our alternative venues and back on track. It has made the whole situation much more manageable and possible.

And a massive thanks to all of you as you waited patiently for the studio situation to settle, for the offers of help, and messages of support. It's been a crazy time, but now we can return to our core business of dance making and joy!

A HEADS UP FOR AN EXCITING EVENT!

As soon as we are back in the studio Zsuzsi Soboslay will be undertaking her delayed Artistic Residency with us.

Zsuzsi has worked with the CDT community as a teacher of CDTeens; with GOLDS to create the award-winning Moon Stories https://bodyecology.com.au/moon-stories-2019/; as a theatre performer and consultant, and independent Dance Ecology and movement educator. Her process offers a dynamic, interactive, and co-creative space where our bodies, our creativity, and our lived experiences become part of a welcoming, re-making space.

The residency will be structured in a combination of focused rehearsals and drop ins. Come as you are, who you are, and how you can participate, contribute and receive. Whether GOLDs [over 55], other CDT, or in the wider community come and join the party, contribute to, and help sustain creative vibrancy in Canberra!

We will let you know as soon as it starts.

In the meantime whet your appetite on this and more details here. https://canberradancetheatre.org/artists-in-residence/

Liz Lea, former artistic director of CDT and co-founder of GOLD, is bringing her work Diamond to The Q in early August. Blending contemporary dance, song, cabaret, and a touch of burlesque, this one-woman show invites audiences into a world of humour, glamour, and heartfelt transformation. With moments of raw honesty and riotous play, Diamond celebrates the brilliance that emerges through time – the courage, fragility, and power that define us as we evolve.
