Short+Sweet Canberra

Short+Sweet Canberra Short+Sweet Canberra is the biggest little festival in the coolest little capital. Short+Sweet is a 10 minute play festival.

Thirty 10 minute plays, more than half written by people from the ACT and Capital Region, are produced and performed by local performing artists over a two week run at the Canberra Theatre Centre. Short+Sweet has had a festival in Canberra since 2009, and this has grown to become a major event for the city’s artistic community. Each year over 100 people contribute to the festival, making this the largest annual collaboration of performing artists in the national capital.

Dear Short and Sweet Canberra Community,

This is a short message to let you know that we have decided not to continue as festival directors for Short and Sweet Canberra.

We enjoyed setting our vision for the 2020 festival, drawing inspiration from your survey responses; appreciated the participation of experienced directors at our evaluation dinner; and learnt a great deal with participants during the 'Giving and Receiving feedback' workshop that we ran in 2020. Like many artists, we felt the frustrations of seeing our vision for the festival fall victim to the uncertainty of COVID.

We love being part of the Canberra creative community, but with the limitations of COVID have committed to smaller scale outlets in 2022: 'Something Quirky' (a collaborative theatre/felt making project with Canberra Region Feltmakers); Lightbulb Improv workshops and shows; and developing small scale bespoke performance projects.

We hope to see you around Canberra and hopefully we will have many opportunities to collaborate with you on projects over the coming years.

If any individual or group would like to discuss the possibility of coordinating Short and Sweet in Canberra, please get in touch with the festival founder, Mark Cleary ([email protected]) to discuss options.

Kind regards

Lynn and Amy

Sydney Short+Sweet festival are seeking some Canberra plays!

Do you have a past Short+Sweet 10 minute play that you're keen to dust off? Able to perform it at the end of August? The great folk have some funds to help with travel too!

To be considered please email the following details to [email protected] by Wednesday 2 June:

- Name and details of your play

- When the play was last performed

- Confirmed director and cast (available end August)

A shortlist will then be put to the Sydney short+sweet festival directors to arrange travel and logistics.

Please note we are still working through Canberra festival logistics, so stay tuned!

With great sadness, Short+Sweet Canberra 2020 has been cancelled. For your safety we cannot hold auditions and rehearsals. No-one knows how long we’ll need to meet these restrictions, so we have taken the hard decision to cancel the 2020 festival.

If you've already volunteered for 2020 then keep your creativity going! If you submitted a script, it will automatically be considered for the 2021 festival. We will invite directors, ITCs and actors to resubmit their interest for the 2021 festival when we have more concrete details.

We are keen to keep our community connected. Our "Day of Opportunity" workshop was so valuable we will re-run this as well as a few others based on your feedback from earlier this year. These workshops will be in October to build towards our 2021 festival. We hope these will be face-to-face but if needs, will conduct the workshops online.

Take care Canberra. Wash your hands, stay at home and let’s see you on the other side.

yours in (pending!) creativity
