Hi folks
this is exciting - get on the edge of the bed
THE BEDROOM PHILOSOPHER – LIVING ON THE EDGE…OF MY BED
Indie song & dance man The Bedroom Philosopher, best known for his Triple J hits Northcote (So Hungover) and I’m So Post Modern takes us back to where it all began.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of his mind-expanding prog-novelty magic he’s rereleasing his first album Living On The Edge…Of My Bed. Get ready for the sound of 2002, when social media was a twinkle in the internet’s eye and reality TV was blowing our minds with Big Brother.
Meanwhile, in Canberra…
Escaped Tasmanian The Bedroom Philosopher AKA Justin Heazlewood had just won his own reality show in the form of ABCs radio documentary competition Heywire. Through this he was able to wiggle his bum in the door at Triple J and pitch his own weekly songwriting segment on The Morning Show with Francis Leach.
An unlikely sound of Bob Dylan meets Lano & Woodley – The Bedroom Philosopher proceeded to knock out a set of completely original, whip-smart folk-oddities – the likes of which were standouts on a radio station dominated by Groove Terminator and The Vines.
From the stage at the end of his bed, donned in performance pyjamas and tie, BP crooned a set of unforgettable gems such as Happy Cow where he communicated his insecurities through the vision of “a budgie sitting on Sandra Sully’s head.”
Kelly The Deli Girl is the story of falling in love with the supermarket help, parodying local references at the time such as Baz Luhmann’s Romeo and Juliet “as our eyes met through the steaming poultry.” Album standout Generation ABC is the ‘American Pie’ of Australian pop culture nostalgia (the song not the movie) – a folk-punk whip-round the beloved TV shows Gen Xers grew up with on ‘Auntie.’
The album includes original versions of Bedroom Philosopher anthems Golden Gaytime, Jesus On Big Brother and Everybody’s Got The Same Insecurities As You, The latter demonstrating Justin Heazlewood’s emotional pathos and concern for mental health (way before it was cool), from the writer who released his childhood memoir Get Up Mum in 2018 which he continues to promote to this day.
Living On The Edge…Of My Bed was initially a short run of CDs sold only at gigs. (A whole box of them was lost after Justin left them underneath one of his sharehouses). This is the first time these ironic, iconic unmastered masterpieces can be enjoyed, complete with theme song and occasional introduction from Triple J DJs – exactly as they sounded to uni students and truck drivers listening along as The Bedroom Philosopher came out of the gates to become the wobbly voice of his generation for a few glorious months.

AND NOW, SOME KEY POINTS FOR THE DISCERNING JOURNALIST / JB HIFI DROPOUT:
• The Bedroom Philosopher will be doing nothing to promote this album. He has retired from live performance.
• He has released an exclusive Origin Story which is a high quality, low budget J-File.
• Two long-lost music videos for Kelly The Deli Girl and Good Lookin’ Girls will be published online.
These are taken from Beddy Phil’s short-lived segment on ABCs Fly TV shortly before it was cancelled (no connection). A brand new video for lead single Generation ABC will be premiered on his Facebook and Youtube channels soon.
• The Bedroom Philosopher is the award-winning musician / comedian who won the Director’s Choice Award for Songs From The 86 Tram at the 2009 Melbourne Comedy Festival. The album of the same name went on to receive an ARIA nomination. He supported The Dresden Dolls in 2012 and, crucially, opened for Peter Combe during his comeback tour of ‘07.
Justin is available for interviews for the next sixteen days. He will then head back to his hometown Burnie and shun all media except for the occasional myspace diatribe on his recurring dream about Dolly Parton and Hulk Hogan.
