What are you in for?
In June, David Williamson’s Travelling North comes to life at Canberra REP Theatre.

The play, directed by Cate Clelland, follows the journey of a couple—Frances (Danielle Spiller) and Frank (Pat Gallagher)—who head north only to be faced with Frank’s signs of mortality. The journey comes with the exploration of the couple’s dynamic with their children, mortality, love, and aging. This play is an homage to age and the old radicals who changed the course of Australian history

Travelling North is a timeless journey that hits close to home.

Frank (Pat Gallagher) and Frances (Danielle Spiller) pack up their lives and head towards the sun-drenched subtropics of Queensland, looking for a second chance at passion and tranquillity, away from the expectations of their adult children.

David Williamson's 'biographical' play is a witty, moving exploration of the ultimate late-life rebellion. A tribute to the courage it takes to live—and love—on your own terms.

Introducing the cast and creatives of David Williamson’s Travelling North at Canberra REP Theatre 12-27 June.* With a bonus glance back to their own travels north.

First up, Danielle Spiller who makes her Canberra REP debut as Frances, a woman who ultimately rediscovers her independence. A CAT Award nominee for Best Actress, Danielle says that playing this role is a joy. “She is a woman who yearns for adventure, though needs to navigate complex relationships which bring the weight of maternal guilt”.

First line: “I was just listening”.

When she isn't bringing complex characters to life on the stage, Danielle is busy chasing her three daughters, playing tennis, and singing in her local choir.

Danielle shares with us a 70s snap with her sister at Queensland’s Big Pineapple. What cuties! Danielle “loved family road trips as a child, but had to keep clear of my little sister who was carsick all the way!”

Next up, Pat Gallagher plays Frank, a stubborn freethinker whose abrasive exterior gives way to a deeply moving battle with mortality. A versatile actor and a familiar face to REP audiences, Pat is as at home in musicals as in straight theatre. He was most recently seen in Ayckbourn’s Bedroom Farce at REP.

First line: “Can you hear the little puffing billies out there hauling in the sugar-cane?”.

Pat shares with us a holiday snap taken of his mother in 1956, and a touching recreation of himself at the same spot in 2012.
