This was Fiction on Saturday for β€˜In Bed by 10’. Now imagine it full with all your LGBTQIA+ dance buddies and the Heaven DJs at full throttle… and where else would you want to be on Fri 27 Nov than β€˜One Night in Heaven’?

πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ β€œWhy do we still need Pride?”

Well, this BBC article gives us quite a few answers.

Companies are becoming quieter about LGBTQ+ support.

Councils are withdrawing funding and removing Pride flags.

Politicians are declaring that gay equality has basically been achieved, while trans people are facing an increasingly hostile public climate.

And some people within our own community are apparently quite comfortable pulling the ladder up behind them.

The BBC highlights Reform-controlled Durham County Council withdrawing Β£2,500 from Durham Pride and removing the rainbow flag from council headquarters.

Yet here’s the part worth noticing:

Durham Pride still went ahead. Organisers said it was their biggest year ever.

People donated. Trade unions contributed. The community showed up.

That matters.

Pride was never supposed to exist only when politicians approved of us, corporations considered us commercially fashionable, or everybody else felt comfortable.

And criticism of corporate Pride is perfectly legitimate. Questioning whether multinational companies really care about LGBTQ+ people is very different from arguing that Pride itself has somehow outlived its purpose.

Because equality written into law does not magically remove prejudice, harassment, violence or discrimination.

And when public support starts becoming quieter precisely because supporting LGBTQ+ people has become more controversial?

That seems a particularly strange moment to announce that Pride is no longer needed.

πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ Pride matters when it is easy.

πŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈ It matters even more when it isn’t.
