Ruben Guthrie is a play by Brendan Cowell that was first published in 2009. It follows the story of the titular character who, at the start of the play, is dragged to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting by his mother and fiancée due to his most recent escapade – jumping off the roof of an apartment building while drunk at a party and breaking his arm. The play shows us various snippets into Ruben’s relationships and how each relationship has been deeply affected by Ruben’s alcoholism, from his oblivious parents who feed his addiction in different ways, all the way through to his enabling best friend, whose presence has always encouraged and emboldened Ruben’s addiction. The play explores the dark side of alcoholism in Australian culture and shines a spotlight on the small things we all do from time to time that enable and encourage a culture of addiction and excess.
