SHORTIS & SIMPSON NEWSLETTER
February 2025
Hello all,
Our next performances are at the Cobargo Folk Festival- we’re writing and producing Five Years Later, marking five years since the fires in that part of the world (a cast of 80 plus), and revisiting our Sing Book Singalong show.
The festival runs from Friday February 28th to Sunday March 2nd. For more info, go to https://cobargofolkfestival.com/cobargo-folk-festival-2025/
The Cobargo Concert - Five Years Later
To quote the festival’s page- ‘Join us for an extraordinary performance that weaves together the voices of our community. The haunting harmonies of the Bega Valley Male Voice Choir blend with the uplifting spirit of the Riverbend Choir, while the thunderous rhythms of Stonewave Taiko echo the beating heart of our resilience. Special appearances by festival headliners add their own colours to this tapestry of remembrance and renewal.
Masterfully crafted by Shortis and Simpson, this concert doesn't just commemorate our past – it celebrates how far we've come and lights the way forward. It's a testament to the unbreakable spirit of Cobargo, where every note carries a story of survival, every song a promise of renewal.
This isn't just a performance – it's our community's journey from devastation to hope, told through the universal language of music. Be part of this historic moment as we honour our past and embrace our future together.
Cobargo Folk Festival, Sunday March 2nd, 11:50am - 1:05pm
The Sing Book Singalong
A repeat performance, premiered at Smith’s last August.
From the early ‘70s to early ‘80s, John Shortis and his friend Brian Simmons, wrote the radio programs that went with the ABC Sing books. They also chose and wrote the songs that were in them. In this show Shortis and Simpson relive those days with a singalong of gems from the books. Lyrics will be displayed, and with special guests, Brian Simmons, Keith Potger, and Peter Combe (on video from Adelaide), the audience will be led through a joyous singalong of well-known pop, folk, and children’s songs just like in the classroom back then. If you weren’t there you will still know most of the songs. In true Shortis and Simpson style there’ll be interesting stories, snippets of history and plenty of humour along the way.
Cobargo Folk Festival, Saturday March 1st, 2.40-4.05pm
Cheers,
John and Moya
