The Young Company Theatre - TYC TYC awakens children and young people’s imaginations; inspiring a culture of true creativity.

The Young Company aims to:

- provide an informal and supportive context for personal and social development in between school and home.

- develop young people’s ability to be agents in their own development and use their own imagination.

- provide a safe context for young people to take risks and responsibility and assert their independence.

- provide young people with opportunities to explore

self and experiment with personal identity in a supportive setting.

- provide young people with opportunities to take responsibility in work-like contexts and develop a range of pre-vocational skills.

- encourage young people to participate more fully in their communities and consider the consequences of the roles they choose to play in the wider world.

- provide young people with opportunities to participate in performance and the creative processes.

Thank you Cairns!

It is with heartfelt gratitude and bittersweet emotion that we announce the closure of The Young Company (TYC) on Friday 24th January. Since its inception in 2009, TYC has been a cornerstone of the Cairns arts community, inspiring and empowering young people through the transformative power of theatre.

Our founder and Chairperson, Leigh Boswell, envisioned TYC as a platform for youth to express themselves, build confidence, and connect through creativity. Guided by extensive consultation with local young people, TYC blossomed into a locally multi-award-winning and nationally recognized organisation that touched the lives of countless children and young people aged 5 to 25 and their families.

Over the years, TYC has reached incredible milestones, from performing at the Cairns Performing Arts Centre to participating in international programs like the Australia Council for the Arts Future Leaders Program. We are immensely proud of our innovative productions, our Mainstage Production Program, school initiatives like Headstart to High School, and events like the Platform Youth Theatre Festival which provided young people with opportunities to grow, shine, and find their voices.

Our journey would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our local community, staff, and - most importantly - the amazing young people who brought TYC to life. From workshops to playing host to national touring companies, our commitment to fostering creativity and connection has been at the heart of everything we do.

As we close this chapter, we reflect on the incredible memories, friendships, and artistic achievements that have defined TYC. While our doors are closing, our legacy lives on in the countless lives we’ve touched and the enduring love for theatre we’ve ignited.

Thank you to everyone who has shared this journey with us. Together, we built something truly special. While this chapter ends, the spirit of TYC lives on in all those we’ve inspired.

Thank You Mike!

This week we bid farewell to our incredible Artistic Director, Mike Elliott, as he steps away from TYC after an extraordinary decade of dedication.

As Artistic Director, Mike brought unparalleled creativity and passion to our stage. From directing unforgettable productions like 1984, Dracula, Lord of the Flies, and Seussical The Musical to fostering the talents of young artists through TYC’s weekly, holiday, and MainStage drama programs, Mike’s impact has been truly transformative.

Mike's journey with TYC has been marked by innovation, commitment, and a deep belief in the potential of young performers. His work on original productions such as After Once Upon A Time and Wonka Goes Wrong showcased his ability to inspire bold, fresh narratives while elevating the voices of our youth.

Beyond his artistic achievements, Mike's leadership of initiatives like FRINGE and the Platform Youth Theatre Festival has cultivated a thriving community where creativity flourished. His passion for empowering young artists to create exhilarating theatrical experiences is the legacy he leaves behind.

Mike, thank you for your vision, heart, and tireless commitment to TYC. You have shaped countless lives and inspired so many through your artistry and mentorship. While we will miss you dearly, we are excited to see what incredible new horizons you’ll explore.
