Miriki Performing Arts

Miriki Performing Arts Miriki Performing Arts is a North Queensland youth First Nations performing arts company. We encoura

An elite and exclusive company of Indigenous caretakers who have been given permission by elders around the country to share their century old stories with the world by way of the performing arts. Miriki Performing Arts has captured a tapestry of Australia's Indigenous heritage and history by sitting with elders from the nations of Yidinji, Wiradjuri, Bundjalung, Arukubindi, Giddamay and descendan

ts from Tafea Province who are now Australian South Sea Island descendants. The stories we showcase are passed on from generation to generation. Miriki are truly honoured to be bearers of such intimate and personal stories which reflect our elders' storyline and cultural identity.

If you have little ones who have never seen the ballet before, we have our annual partner showcase tomorrow.

Our kids from Mulungu Health Service Mareeba have been working with the The Australian Ballet Education unit for this past week and they are keen to show what they have worked on.

This will be followed by a performance from The Australian Ballet Education team performing Wonderland, a magical reimagining of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and a special SOLO by Miriki alumni Karli who has been on tour this year with the Australian Ballet Education unit.

As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Miriki Performing Arts, we reflect on our impactful productions that have shaped our journey. Our second production, 'Ngali Guman (We are One)', performed in 2016, stands out as a profound example of our commitment to storytelling and cultural advocacy.

'Ngali Guman' was a performative response to the stories of survival from West Papua. Through a series of interviews and meetings with the community and elders, the Miriki Performing Arts dancers choreographed a moving response to the injustices taking place in West Papua. This production was a heartfelt tribute to resilience and unity.

Directed by our Artistic Director, Pauline Lampton, 'Ngali Guman' was enriched with audio, dance, live music, video, and special guest performances from the West Papuan community. This included powerful contributions from the Goondoi Dancers, Airileke and Rize of the Morning Star, Deline Briscoe, and Sam Roem. The show was a testament to the collaborative spirit and artistic excellence that define Miriki Performing Arts.

As we reminisce about our evolution from 'Biddigal Dreaming' to 'Ngali Guman', we are grateful for the powerful stories we have shared and the connections we have built. Our 10th Annual Gala Dinner is a celebration of this incredible journey, honoring the rich tapestry of narratives and artistic expressions that have defined our first decade.

Join us at the Gala as we reflect on our roots, celebrate our present, and look forward to the future of Miriki Performing Arts. Here's to another decade of storytelling, cultural celebration, and artistic excellence.

As we celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Miriki Performing Arts, we reflect on the incredible talents and journeys that have defined our company. Among the most inspiring figures is Tahlia Burchill-O’Brien, a dancer whose passion, leadership, and artistry have left an indelible mark on our hearts and stages.

From a young age, Tahlia felt the call of leadership and the magnetic pull of dance. Tahlia's journey with Miriki Performing Arts began with her mesmerising performances in 'Biddigal Dreaming' (2014-2015) and 'Ngali Gulman' (2016). Her solo piece, titled 'Connections to Country', in 'Biddigal Dreaming', was a profound expression of her heritage and artistic soul, captivating audiences with its depth and beauty.

Beyond the stage, Tahlia's commitment to her craft and community is unwavering. She has been a guiding force in the promotion of languages and cultures, education, the arts and leadership. Her influence extends far and wide, touching lives through her work as a cultural ambassador, educator, artist and mentor.

Tahlia's Christian faith is woven into all she does, guiding her actions and inspiring her dedication to serving others. Tahlia's talents have shone brightly in prestigious events and festivals. She has graced many stages, from basketball courts in communities to the bright lights of Performing Arts Centres and On-screen television. Her most recent choreographic and performance showcase was at the 2024 Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) Fashion Performance, in the Tanks Arts Centre. Her dynamic presence as a choreographer and guest dancer on Move It Mob Style (MIMS) on National Indigenous Television (NITV) further showcases her versatility. Those being only two highlights of her extensive choreographic and performing experience.

Her journey is not just about personal achievement but about uplifting and inspiring others. Tahlia has mentored many young people across Australia, sharing her wisdom and passion, and empowering the next generation to find their voices and express their stories through dance and other creative ways.

As we honour a decade of Miriki Performing Arts, we celebrate Tahlia Burchill-O’Brien for her remarkable contributions and the light she brings to the world. Her story is a true demonstration to the power of passion, the strength of cultural connection, and the transformative language of dance. Tahlia embodies the spirit of Miriki Performing Arts, and her journey continues to inspire us all.
