A lovely story from Arashiyama 🌸🌉

The beautiful Togetsukyo Bridge spans the Katsura River and has been one of Kyoto’s most famous landmarks for centuries 😊 Its name means “Moon Crossing Bridge,” inspired by Emperor Kameyama, who said the full moon looked as though it was crossing the bridge as it moved through the night sky 🌝

I think that’s such a poetic way to name a place 🩵 It reminds me how deeply beauty, nature, and storytelling are woven into Japanese culture 🌿

You are warmly invited to join me Saturdays from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Oxlades in Cairns and experience the beauty of Japanese woodblock printing for yourself 🤗

An early start in Kyoto 🌅🌸

It’s 6:00 in the morning and Kathy and I are off to the famous Kitano Tenmangu Market 😊 Held around one of Kyoto’s most important shrines, this market has been drawing visitors, artists, and treasure hunters for generations 🌿

One of the things I love about Japan is that you never know what you’ll discover around the next corner. Today it’s antiques, crafts, local food, and then straight off to our mokuhanga workshop 🩵

You are warmly invited to join me Saturdays from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Oxlades in Cairns and discover the joy of mokuhanga for yourself 🤗

A little mokuhanga trick 🌿😊

When printing, I sometimes want to check a colour without completely lifting the paper from the block. A small weight lets me gently peek underneath and then lay the paper back down without disturbing the kento registration 👀

Over the years I’ve collected all sorts of beautiful Japanese paperweights, from commemorative pieces to old shodō calligraphy weights. They’re practical, but they’re also little works of art in their own right 🩵 I think that’s one of the lovely things about Japan, even everyday tools are made with beauty in mind 🌸

The Ghost street in Kyoto, stumbled upon the Daishogun Hachi shrine. Built to protect the new Edo capital from bad luck in 794. It’s on Ichijo yokai street or the street of 100 monsters!! These are the two watercolour sketches I made symbolising protection. (The braided ropes shimenawa and the white papers the shime. )

The Sagano Bamboo Forest 🌿🌸

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is more than just a beautiful place to visit, it’s a full sensory experience 😊 The sound of the wind moving through the bamboo is even officially recognised by Japan’s Ministry of Environment as one of the country’s “100 Soundscapes of Japan” 🌝

I love that idea so much, protecting not only what we see, but also the beauty of what we hear 🩵 Listening to the bamboo sway feels incredibly calming and inspiring 🤗

A peaceful morning at Heian Shrine in Kyoto 🌸

Today I visited the beautiful Heian Shrine 😊 Built in 1895 to honour Kyoto’s imperial history, it’s famous for its enormous red torii gate and tranquil gardens 🌿

Walking through places like this always slows me down a little. The quiet colours, the curved roofs, the feeling of history everywhere… it’s endlessly inspiring for my mokuhanga work 🩵

A quiet little hotel room carving session 🤫🌸

While travelling in Japan, I’ve been sitting here carefully carving mokuhanga in my hotel room 😊 Plastic sheet underneath, tiny wood chips everywhere, and slowly working through five different colour blocks on this delicate shina wood 🌿

This piece is full of momiji leaves and water reflections, and because the wood is so thin, every cut has to be gentle and precise 👀 After 40 years of mokuhanga, I still find this process deeply calming, even in the middle of travel 🩵

Off exploring again 🌞🌊

Today I’m visiting beautiful Amanohashidate and heading out to Ine, the famous fishing village where the funaya boat houses sit right over the water. The boats glide straight into the homes beneath them, a way of life that has existed here for centuries 🌿

Japan always amazes me with how closely daily life and nature still live together 🩵 Sunny skies, little fishing villages, and a boat cruise ahead… perfect day!

A little art supply treasure hunt in Kyoto 🌸

Today at Gosendo I found some fascinating new colours 😊 Granulating watercolours that separate into beautiful shifting tones, and Holbein “Nightfall” colours inspired by those dusky, atmospheric shadows you see in Kawase Hasui prints 🌝

I also picked up the tiniest little brush for delicate lines, plus a few carving tools for my students back home 🤗 Prices have definitely climbed in Japan lately, but honestly… mokuhanga tools are very hard to resist 🩵

Kyoto treasure hunting today ⛩️

Shiro Kasamatsu was adopted into the famous Kaburagi artistic circle as a young artist and spent years under the strict publisher system before finally breaking away to print his own work. You can feel that quiet independence in his glowing village scenes and lantern light 🌌

Then I found this bold work by Taizo Minagawa, who actually began as a kimono textile dyer before becoming a printmaker after the war. He later became passionate about teaching ordinary people and students, not just elite collectors, which is something I really connect with myself 👩‍🏫

A very happy day wandering Kyoto and finding stories hidden inside these beautiful prints 🩵

You are warmly invited to join me Saturdays from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Oxlades in Cairns.
