This beautiful amber coloured jewel is called Gum Arabic and you’ll find it as the binder in Watercolour and Gouache to name only a few uses for this material. Gum Arabic was used by the Ancient Egyptians not only to bind their paints, inks and cosmetics but also as a glue to hold the bandages in place for mummification. Pliny the elder wrote about Gum Arabic to soothe ulcers and burns. Traded as early as the 1st Century originating from Africa and traded through the Arabian ports which is how it received its name ‘ Gum Arabic’.

Classes on offer this term in our teaching space with Shelly Anfield. Small class sizes with each class tailored to individual needs, we welcome people at all stages of their painting and drawing journey.
