After five incredible years, we have officially wrapped up the sales operations of Blackspace Creative.

What started as a bold vision, a safe, visible space for Tasmanian Aboriginal artists to share and sell their work has grown into something truly powerful. From 12 to 21 artists, from pop-ups to permanent spaces across Lutruwita, we’ve helped spotlight our culture, shift perceptions, and create lasting impact.

To our artists, thank you for your trust. To our supporters, donors, family, and friends—thank you for believing in the vision and backing us every step of the way.

While we close the book on this chapter, we’re not disappearing. Blackspace will live on as an online artist directory and cultural hub, continuing to connect community, share knowledge, and celebrate First Nations creativity.

Our website will remain live, and we invite you to stay connected as we evolve.

It has been sometime since we posted on our socials and while this might be confusing for some, we are still operating, albeit on a smaller, more sustainable scale. This isn’t the reason for our post though…

Last week, devastating news broke that a respected Elder and cultural artist, Auntie Jeanette James had her echidna quill necklace stolen from an exhibition in the south of the state.

We are hoping, that the community we’ve built who value and appreciate our cultural artwork and practices will keep an eye out and pass on any information to Crimestoppers in the hopes of Auntie getting this invaluable necklace back.

These works are incredibly rare, take a long time to craft and are intrinsically connected to the artist who made them. This theft has been heartbreaking for the artists involved, the broader Tasmanian Aboriginal community and our allies.

Let’s get this necklace back!

An Aboriginal elder whose handcrafted jewellery was stolen from an exhibition space on Hobart's eastern shore says she was gobsmacked to learn about the theft.

If you’ve been on our website in the last couple of days you’ll notice we’ve shut down our store! Last orders have been sent out and we are closed for the holiday season!

Continuing with her signature style, Bianca delivers on yet another beautiful necklace inspired by our coastlines.

The salt waters surrounding lutruwita/Tasmania are singing out with this necklace made from Penguin shells and Bull kelp collected by Bianca. A simple yet elegant combination that will be the perfect accessory for any occasion!

The necklace measures approximately 80cm in length.

FINAL DAY!

It’s our last day with TUNAPRI PALAWA at Junction Arts Festival and we’re hoping we see a heap of families and children for our last workshop with Bianca and Tristan. Come in, escape the rain and get creative!

We are in full swing with TUNAPRI PALAWA at Junction Arts Festival. So much so, we’ve been quiet on our socials!

We are open today from 12-3pm hosting family friendly workshops with Bianca & Tristan Templar. Then from 5-9pm tonight our retail space opens along with our sound and light show.

BLACKSPACE POP-UP SHOP ✨

We are coming back to Launceston for our second iteration of our pop-up shop. This time we’ll be in Princes Square with our friends Junction Arts Festival.

Our retail and trade space will be open for browsing and purchasing between 5-8pm Thursday 15th, Friday 16th and Saturday 17th of September.

We have new works especially for the pop-up and an exclusive collection of works only available through Blackspace Creative.

We’ve just done a small restock of new works by Annette Day in preparation for TUNAPRI PALAWA and our pop-up shop in Launceston later this month!

This beautiful hand woven basket has been made with one of our traditional fibres, River Reed and adorned with precious purple Maireener shells.
