Jumping on Dear Sunday 🐬 breakdown of touring costs, we want to share with you the reality of what it costs us to host a show in an Australian Non-gaming, independent, 250 cap venue. It feels pretty vulnerable sharing this to the masses but we think it needs to be spoken about, particularly with BIGSOUND on this week.
We want to clarify we are not complaining, simply explaining, the overheads are exorbitant and the reality is that more needs to be done, urgently, to support independent venues. These are based off our basic overheads per show, they do NOT include our own wages, bar costs, alcohol costs or even band payments! People regularly assume the venue can cop the financial loss of a show, they can weather the poor attendance or drop our alcohol prices to RSL prices. But it’s simply not the case. We are not a gaming venue. Our priority is MUSIC.
These are simply the basic overheads per show. These are representative of our industry but also only exact to us. Some venue’s overheads would be significantly more. We would love to see them!
More can be done by everyone, us included and we are trying
• daytime / family friendly shows
• improved access
• all genres / all styles
• actively supporting diversity
• supporting support acts $10 drinks menu
• VIP membership for discounts
But support needs to come from all angles:
• audiences buying earlier
• ticket holders supporting the opening acts
• to bands choosing independent venues
• shows all going hard on show promo
• governments finding solutions to the ridiculous cost of living, improved funding and better ONGOING support.
As incubators for original, Australian live music we will continue to push as hard as we can. We will always make some noise and happily stir the pot to support the Australian Music Scene.
