John Russell is BOB & OTHERS

Bob is a composite of a number of passengers who found themselves diverted to Gander following the events of September 11, 2001. One passenger in particular, Tom McKeon, a cynical New Jersey native who was hosted by the Mayor of Appleton, Derm Flynn, enjoyed too much Irish Wh***ey and found his defences breaking down and outlook on humanity changing.

COME FROM AWAY tells the true story of 7000 people across 38 planes landing on the doorsteps of Gander, Newfoundland. While the world witnessed the worst acts of humankind, communities opened their homes and hearts to complete strangers. This story reminds us that even in moments of unimaginable tragedy, there can be extraordinary courage, compassion and humanity.

Nigel Dick is CLAUDE & OTHERS.

Claude Elliott was the Mayor of Gander, Newfoundland, during the events of September 11, 2001. Alongside the people of Gander, and other surrounding communities, Claude helped welcome and house the unexpected visitors. He is famously quoted saying “On the first day, we had 7,000 strangers. On the third day, we had 7,000 friends. And on the fifth day, we lost 7,000 family members.”

25 years, we remember.

As we prepare to share Come From Away, we at The Playhouse Theatre, aim to honour the stories and true events at the heart of this story.

In the days following 9/11, thousands of passengers found themselves stranded far from home, while communities across Newfoundland opened their schools, churches, homes, and hearts to complete strangers.

Their story reminds us that even in moments of unimaginable tragedy, there can be extraordinary courage, compassion, and humanity.
