5k advice 🏃♂️
Podium Finisher 🥇
First 5k event
28 years old
What is your experiencing of running and why did you choose the 5k to sign up to?
I’ve been running for about a year now. I’m starting my build towards the Sydney marathon, so thought it’d be a great opportunity to test where I’m at over a shorter race. I’ve never done one before, so had no clue where my legs and lung were at and thought there’s only one way to find out. Training is great, but never quite the same as a race, gaining race experience is invaluable, no matter the distance!
At what point did you realize you might place in the top three?
About a day or two before. My coach Luke Burrows, sent me the results from the last two years, and said I had a good chance. It’s one of those things though, you never know until you’re in the moment. So just tried to control what I could and with about 500m to go, had a decent idea I was in contention!
What advice would you give to someone thinking about running their first 5K?
100% do it. You’ll never regret signing up for the race. The sense of accomplishment and happiness you feel afterwards is well worth it. With regards to the race itself - don’t do what I did 😂 slower and aim to negative split. Every race I’ve ever done in negative splits, I’ve really enjoyed and have always performed my best.
What keeps you motivated to push through the tough points?
Honestly, the love of it. Signing up for a race means I always want to put my best foot forward. So when training gets tough, I always have my reason why. During the race - well I guess you’ve signed up to be there, pain is temporary, so sometimes you just have to deal with it and push through. You’ll never regret a race or run, but you’ll definitely regret not doing the race or run, so give it your all.
