Yep, sometimes I am that Mum. On my phone while my children PLAY. Thanks for being my default work admin location. Emails. Invoices. Socials posts. Grant applications. I have done it all over the years.
As a trained playworker I am constantly assessing if they need support in their PLAY or if they are happy just doing their thing. My son would PLAY choo choo trains all day if he could. Stopping only when he notices other kids want a turn and have been waiting.
I can see my kids. They are playing. There is nothing that risky. They know when they have finished their turn, I never enforce that. They don't need me interupting. And I get to run my one-Mum business in a few short bursts and hang with my little rascals when they actually want me to PLAY.
Does it look bad? Definately.
Are my children lacking in playful interactions and quality time with me? 100% not.
Do we spend a huge amount of other playtime outside, covered in mud, barefoot, hanging from trees and being outrageous? You know it.
*apologies for typos and briefness of email replies 🤣
