INTRODUCING THE REPERTOIRE 🎶
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was the most prominent Russian composer of the nineteenth century, with works including three celebrated ballets (Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker), two of the most regularly staged Russian operas, concertos including his piano concertos and Violin Concerto, and his popular symphonies. He drew inspiration from Russian folk and popular music, blending novel ideas with both classical and national elements, to create a highly individual musical voice that continues to resonate with audiences worldwide to this day.
Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin (1879), is regarded as one of the greatest operas in the Russian repertoire. Based on Alexander Pushkin’s popular verse novel, it tells a deeply human story of love, regret, missed opportunities, and emotional maturity. Rather than focusing on grand historical events, Tchaikovsky described it as a series of “lyrical scenes,” less concerned with the plot, and instead placing the emotional lives of the characters at the heart of the drama. In the opera, this formula of many short scenes in three acts allows for Tchaikovsky to add frequent instrumental interludes, and some of the richest moments in the opera come from the purely musical moments.
WADO will be opening our concert on Sunday 26th July with two dances from this famous opera - Polonaise (Act III) and Waltz (Act II).
