UPCOMING: Please join us for the launch of π˜™π˜¦π˜΅π˜Άπ˜³π˜―π˜ͺ𝘯𝘨 by Nur Aishah Kenton (Nur Aishah A F Kenton) and Shelley Xue (Shelley Xue)

Friday 4 September, 2026 from 6-8pm at Hillvale Gallery
43-45 Edward Street, Brunswick, Merri-Bek, Naarm

π˜™π˜¦π˜΅π˜Άπ˜³π˜―π˜ͺ𝘯𝘨 considers the act of revisiting one’s motherland, where the notion of home is shaped by both continuity and change. To return as an adult is to encounter landscapes, places, and relationships that carry the resonance of childhood, yet feel creased by the passage of time.

Rather than offering a singular notion of homecoming for both artists, Returning embraces the uncertainty of return itself from two separate viewpoints, although both share unspoken similarities. The photographic work lives as a site of negotiation between what is recalled, observed, and what inevitably slips away. In these moments, returning is revealed not as an arrival, but as an ongoing act of recognising and finding oneself anew.

What does returning signify for you?
π˜™π˜¦π˜΅π˜Άπ˜³π˜―π˜ͺ𝘯𝘨 will be exhibited in our front gallery alongside 12 π˜”π˜–π˜–π˜•π˜š by Ilsa Wynneβ€”Hoelscher in the back gallery.

12 π˜”π˜–π˜–π˜•π˜š - In conversation with artist Ilsa Wynne-Hoelscher (Ilsa Wynne-Hoelscher)Β

Join us at the gallery for a discussion between 12 π˜”π˜–π˜–π˜•π˜š artist Ilsa Wynne-Hoelscher and book designer Brigette Cantarella (Brig Cantarella β€” Designer) Wynne-Hoelscher and Cantarella partnered together to create Look Both Ways; an independent publishing house dedicated to artist books and contemporary photographic publications.

Saturday 5 September, 2026, 1pm at Hillvale Gallery
43-45 Edward Street, Brunswick, Merri-Bek, Naarm

Coinciding with the opening of Wynne-Hoelscher’s exhibition 12 π˜”π˜–π˜–π˜•π˜š at Hillvale Gallery this casual conversation will dive into the process behind long form documentation of birth and family life and the role of the photobook in her practice.
Emerging from a shared commitment to the photobook as an artistic medium, Look Both Ways extends their collaborative approach to publishing, supporting the development of new works by both established and emerging artists. Through this practice, Wynne-Hoelscher continues to explore the book as a critical site for artistic expression, collaboration and cultural exchange.

Please join us on Saturday 16th May at 2pm for a panel discussion with artists from the exhibition 'Correspondences'. To begin the discussion Christine McFetridge will perform a live reading of her essay, 'Thresholds'.
