That Was Then / This Is Now is a projection and music activation that reimagines Central Dandenong’s public spaces as open-air dance floors, inspired by Melbourne’s 1990s rave culture.

Launching on May 23 from 6pm–9pm, Harmony Square and surrounding laneways will come alive with large-scale projection artworks, live performances by and , DJ sets from , and a roaming Projector Bike broadcasting classic Tranzmission mixes curated by . This opening night event is completely FREE and open to the public.

The event also features projection works created by Dandenong High School students through workshops led by Little Projector Company and , bringing local young people into the creative process.

Drawing inspiration from rave flyers, DIY graphics, warehouse parties, and Cyberthon guerrilla TV broadcasts, the project culminates in a large-format projection illuminating Dandenong’s skyline from the Thomas Street Carpark. This major projection work will be visible nightly from 6pm–1am, from May 23 to May 31.

Commissioned fpr Dear Agnes,, Pastoral Phantasmagoria, or Straight From The Horse’s Mouth, is an immersive installation in a horse stable.

Audiences peer through a curtain at a projection-mapped horse: an unreliable narrator, whose fractured, multi-voiced storytelling convulses in a fever dream of colonisation, ecological collapse, and the ghosts of the Western District.

Through dark humour, and an unsettling interplay of sound and moving image, the work forces spectators to witness grassland decimation, hidden histories, and the immutable persistence of Country.

Thank you Creative City Hobsons Bay and everyone who came out to see it.

oin us for a free outdoor screening of Westwind: Djalu’s Legacy—Djalu Gurruwiwi, an ageing Yolngu elder and master Yidaki (didgeridoo) player, is a custodian of his people’s ancient Songlines that have stored his clan’s Knowledge, Culture and Country since the birth of time. But Djalu is running out of time to pass on these Songlines, entrusted to him for the future of his people. His sons and community, struggling to come to terms with the consequences of colonisation, are lost. When Djalu breaks with tradition in an effort to save the Songlines, world-famous musician Gotye becomes an unexpected family member and helps amplify the songs to the world.

Director spent more than five years documenting Djalu’s journey, which ultimately manifests as one of his oldest Creation stories – the Wititj Songline that tells of two different serpents speaking together to maintain balance in the cycle of life. Supported by the MIFF Premiere Fund, the resulting film showcases this meeting of two worlds, where Western pop and Indigenous sacred songs become a common language used to transcend barriers.
