Following last year’s gorgeous performance, violinist Işın Çakmakçıoğlu and pianist Akemi Schubert are back with a program of works that span continents and centuries. Isin’s expressive lyricism, elegance and brilliance have earned him special recognition, with the Suddeutsche Zeitung (Germany) describing his playing as “musical fireworks.” Akemi, who gave her debut recital in Fujisawa City at a young age, is a well-established soloist, and highly sought after chamber musician, both in Australia and in her home country, Japan.

CATHERINE TRAICOS

Catherine Traicos is a Western Australian based composer, songwriter and performer known for powerful, intimate vocals and evocative lyricism, moving seamlessly between strength and vulnerability. Grounded in feeling, her work draws listeners into a space that is both close and expansive.

Her latest album, In The Heart Of The Night, was born in a studio by the sea by Catherine and her long-time collaborator and confidante Nick Huggins. The pull of the tides, the glow of the moon, the sounds of eternity and the absence of any distraction forged a strikingly beautiful single body of work dissected into two longer pieces, Scene 1 and Scene 2.

Melodies drift like waves through an ambient analogue sea. Ethereal and grounded by a breath by mistake, by strings and the warmth of piano keys, In The Heart of The Night is an ancient siren calling you across the seas – a magnetic pull towards a beautiful and inevitable darkness. While the themes Traicos and Huggins explore are quite dark, there is a sense of an almost transcendental peace infused throughout the work.

This winter, Ensemble Liber returns to Tempo Rubato for the third time. They present Rebecca Clarke’s Dumka for violin, viola and piano, Mendelssohn’s Sonata No. 2 for cello and piano, and Schumann’s Piano Quartet No. 1.

Violist Haram Kim, cellist Josh Dema, pianist Christopher Wong, and violinist Kye Yim Loh bring their expertise and artistry to the performance, creating both warmth and moments of virtuosic brilliance for the audience.

Ensemble Liber, led by Kye Yim Loh, is a Melbourne-based ensemble that does not maintain a fixed lineup. Instead, it brings together different musicians and formations for each project, allowing the group to explore a wide range of chamber music.

Affinity Quartet has been praised by critics for their ‘emotional breadth’ and ‘flawless’ approach to classical and contemporary chamber music. Entering their second decade, 2026 promises to be another big year for the ensemble with a focus on collaboration with some exceptional musicians.

Our program title UpLIFT plays American-Japanese composer and cellist Paul Wiancko’s work ‘Lift’. Affinity Quartet premières Wiancko’s 2016 string quartet in Australia. National Public Radio wrote of this work, ‘If Haydn were alive to write a string quartet today, it may sound something like Paul Wiancko’s LIFT’— and the New York Times; ‘… a work that ‘teems with understanding of and affection for the string-quartet tradition.’

Catherina Lee and Isabella Bignasca join Affinity Quartet for UpLIFT, two wonderful Australian musicians currently based overseas – Catherina in London/Vienna and Isabella in Auckland/New York.

FRIDAY 12TH JUNE 8PM
LAURA VAUGHAN - NIGHT MUSIC

TICKETS $30 | $20
https://www.temporubato.com.au/tempo-concerts/laura-vaughan-night-music

Laura Vaughan, viola da gamba

The viola da gamba is an instrument that seems to wake most fully after dark, when its soft, veiled sound can speak without being hurried, in the hush of the night.

Night Music is shaped around music for the quieter hours that values intimacy over display, unfolding slowly to draw listeners inside the delicate sound world of the viola da gamba. The program centres on seventeenth century music from England and France, including eccentrically expressive works by Sainte-Colombe, Nicolas Hotman and music of great elegance by Marin Marais. Colourful English pieces by Tobias Hume and from the Manchester Manuscript explore the richly experimental music for lyra viol, shaped by alternate tunings for the viol and a sense of improvisation.

Two contemporary solo works sit naturally within this landscape. L’ombre d’un doute by Philippe Hersant and Lines Curved, Rivers Mirrored by Ed Finis extend the viol’s expressive voice into the present.

Historically, the viola da gamba was often heard late at night, played softly in private rooms. Night Music draws on that tradition, offering a recital that feels close, personal, and unhurried. It is an invitation to listen deeply and linger with the sound.

Online sales close at 7:30pm on the day of the concert. Tickets can be purchased at the door, dependent on availability. Tempo Rubato is a cashless venue.
