In 2020 longtime colleagues Ben Dix and Dan McKay joined forces as Australia’s newest guitar duo for their first recitals for the Melbourne Guitar Festival’s Recital Series. Making their debut in livestream recitals the pair are best known for their work within the Melbourne Guitar Quartet.

Ben and Dan are thrilled to present an exciting range of works from Europe to Australia, from the Baroque to modern periods, including two new works written especially for them.

Pianist Catherine Broadstock, described as ‘exciting and passionate’, performs works paired with poetry recited by soprano and creative artist Susan Ellis.

Piano works by Ann Carr-Boyd, Wendy Hiscocks, Rhoderick McNeill, Stuart Greenbaum, Kitty Parker, Angie Coffey, Brenton Broadstock, Miriam Hyde, Betty Beath, Graeme Denniss and Learne Faint.

Poems by David Campbell, Ian Mudie, W. Flexmore Hudson, Andrew Burke, Rex Ingamells, Veronica Dwyer, Judith Wright, A. H. Scott, Roland Robinson, Barcroft Boake and Gail Kay.

Julie Adam is a hidden luminary of the classical piano world. Born in Hungary, where she received her early musical training, Julie moved to Australia, where, from 11 years old, she played in studio broadcasts, public recitals and concerti for the ABC. Scholarships led Julie to study in Europe, where she made London her base, playing frequently at the Wigmore Hall and on the South Bank, and broadcasting regularly as a soloist for BBC Radio. Since her return to Australia, Julie Adam has continued her musical activities.

For our October Mattutino, Julie brings us a recital dedicated to one of the 20th century’s greatest composers, whose significance continues to grow throughout the world even today: Béla Bartók. Apart from being an extraordinary pianist and teacher, he took the collecting of folk song to a new level, ultimately assimilating the various folk music styles into his own compositions. His many friends and colleagues esteemed him greatly as a human being of the utmost high moral principles. Some of these friends and colleagues are featured in this recital. Beside music by Bartók (of course) hear piano works by Ernõ Dohnányi, Frederick Delius, Amy Beach, Zoltán Kodaly, and Julie Adam herself: an Hommage to Bartók.

As always, stay for a complimentary sherry/OJ and a sweet treat from our friends at Ovens St Bakery after the concert.

Barry is a stray cat who we have been looking after. When we first met him, he was very wary of human contact. But now: he has been fixed, he is accepting head scratches and he is comfortable sleeping inside overnight.

He is also extremely handsome. And quite a character.

He is much loved here. But we have too many animals. And he really does need his own kingdom to rule. He will need someone willing to work with a cat who isn’t used to human love/companionship. But for the right person, he will be an amazing little friend.
