EXHIBITION: CARLENE’S TJUKURPA
THE LEGACY OF CARLENE THOMPSON - SUPPORTED BY SELECT STUDIO ARTISTS

A senior Pitjantjatjara woman, former Chair of Ernabella Arts, and an acclaimed painter and ceramicist, Carlene Thompson developed a distinctive visual language grounded in the stories, knowledge and Country of her family. Her celebrated ceramic vessels alongside her expressive paintings, most often depicting kalaya (emu); a creation story connected to her father’s Country, while her striking mamu spirit figures embodied the power and presence of Anangu Tjukurpa. Across painting and ceramics alike, Carlene forged a visual language of remarkable confidence and originality, one that seamlessly united innovation with cultural continuity.

This exhibition stands as a celebration of Carlene’s enduring legacy, bringing together some of the last works she created, alongside a selection of artists from her community whose practices support the remarkable artistic tradition she helped create. The exhibition reflects the strength of a living community connected through shared stories, Country and creative practice. Together, these works honour Carlene’s lifelong commitment to passing on knowledge, her generosity as a mentor, and the profound influence she leaves on Ernabella Arts and the wider landscape of Australian contemporary art.

Focusing in on the details of Vicki Cullinan’s body of work. There’s a miraculous amount of detail and intricacy of brushwork, blended with her gentle palette, to depict her ancestral stories. She embeds in her paintings depictions of the landscape, filled with rock holes, hills and creeks, as well as her Tjukuṟpa, creating highly detailed, breathtaking pieces.

Recently recognised in Vogue as an influential Indigenous creative, our spotlight this week is on Katie Walatinna, a rising artist grounded and surrounded by painting her whole upbringing. She paints the Pilpira, the Ghost Gums, that grow throughout her community. Her works hold a quiet, mystical quality, colour and texture cascading gently across the canvas.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT : KATIE WALATINNA

Katie Walatinna is part of a new generation of First Nations artists whose work is deeply grounded in family, community, and Country. Based at Indulkana on the APY Lands, Walatinna grew up surrounded by painting, first accompanying her mother, Jeannie, to the art centre where she watched her create works inspired by the ridges and contours of their Country. She also paints alongside her aunt, respected artist Rosalind Tjanyari, continuing a family tradition that has shaped her artistic voice from childhood. Rather than working in isolation, Walatinna embraces the shared creative energy of the studio, explaining, “I like the feeling of everyone being in the space together… I’m working on my own paintings, but I’m not alone.” Her paintings reflect this sense of connection, celebrating both the physical landscape and the relationships that bind people to place.

Walatinna’s Ghost Gum series captures the striking forms of these iconic trees with expressive layers of colour and texture, transforming familiar elements of the desert landscape into works of quiet strength and beauty. For Walatinna, the trees are inseparable from the Country that inspires her every day, and her paintings convey both their physical presence and their cultural significance. Her growing reputation was recognised in Vogue Australia, which profiled her as one of a new wave of influential Indigenous creatives.. As the feature observed, Walatinna’s artistic journey has come full circle—from helping her mother paint as a child to establishing her own distinctive practice while working beside the women who first inspired her.
