Pro Hart Outback Art Prize Finalist 2026

‘This artwork represents the time and effort stock agents put into travelling to remote properties.

The brass fittings and Globite label reference the century-old Australian luggage brand, best known for its durable vintage suitcases and school cases. The colours and textures of the shirt, together with the old screws representing the scrub, bushes and small trees of the arid outback, suggest that the agent is literally becoming “one with Country”.

The kangaroo pattern is inspired by the silk linings of vintage travel cases and the bedroom wallpaper found in old outback hotels and roadside motels. The “RPM” Williams on the shirt’s collar suggests the company vehicle’s tachometer and the long hours spent driving to rural properties, while the XXI refers to too many roadhouse meals.

The gold cow and sheep silhouettes represent imagined campaign medals earned after many years of mustering livestock. Travelling stock agents also frequently become valued members of close-knit outback communities.’

Pro Hart Outback Art Prize Finalist 2026

‘In No easy passage, a figure moves through country forged by exposure, pressure and shifting conditions. Small against stone, scrub and track, the body persists, bearing its load through terrain that offers no easy way.

This passage is chosen, but not controlled: the figure enters the landscape willingly, yet the journey becomes both physical and internal. The act of carving mirrors that endurance—cut by cut, the surface is worked under pressure until figure and land begin to merge.

The ground is not a backdrop but an agent, pressing in, fracturing the image and absorbing the body into a dense, unstable structure. The work reads the outback as a field of testing and survival, where movement through land becomes movement through fear, memory and resilience.’

Pro Hart Outback Art Prize Finalist 2026

‘My piece acknowledges the outback, with which sheep and wool have had a long connection throughout history and through to the present day.

Wool felting feels personal as both my medium and my story, having been involved in the wool industry since childhood. The work is a tribute to my family and to the resilience and enduring spirit of the Australian outback.

While travelling along the Barrier Highway from Broken Hill early one morning, I stopped and marvelled at the sun glistening on the dew-covered saltbush, orange dirt, green grass and burgundy groundcover.

I knew then that I wished to recreate this scene in wool, using natural fibres produced from the land.’

MMIAA Drop-in Creative Space with Anthony Hayward

Broken Hill City Art Gallery and West Darling Arts invite First Nations artists living in the Maari Ma region to join us for two free creative drop-in days.

Whether you’re working on an entry for the 2026 Maari Ma Indigenous Art Awards, experimenting with a new idea or simply looking for a welcoming space to create and talk about art, come along and spend the day with local Ngiyampaa artist and West Darling Arts Aboriginal Arts Officer Anthony Hayward.

OPEN CUT COMMISSION 2027 | APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN

Broken Hill City Art Gallery invites artists, creatives and researchers from across Australia to apply for the Open Cut Commission 2027.

The successful applicant will receive $6,000 to develop an artistic or research project that responds to the Australian outback, regional communities, Broken Hill and/or its surrounding environment.

Projects may encompass visual art, ceramics, photography, writing, performance, sound, moving image, research, experimentation or interdisciplinary practice.

Community engagement is an important part of the commission, with applicants invited to propose a meaningful public program or engagement opportunity for the Broken Hill community.

The resulting work will be presented at Broken Hill City Art Gallery between August and October 2027.

Applications close Friday, 16 October 2026.

Pro Hart - Beyond the Canvas: a retrospective exhibition 20 Years on

Do you have a Pro Hart artwork, photograph, personal item or piece of memorabilia that tells a story about Pro?

The Broken Hill City Art Gallery is preparing a special retrospective exhibition commemorating 20 years since the passing of Pro Hart, one of Broken Hill’s most celebrated and beloved artists.
As part of the exhibition, we are seeking locally held Pro Hart artworks and memorabilia to help create a rich and personal picture of Pro’s life, work and enduring connection to Broken Hill.

We are interested in hearing from anyone who may have:
- Pro Hart paintings, drawings, prints or other artworks
- Sketches, studies or works on paper
- Sculptural works or objects
- Photographs of Pro, his family, studio, exhibitions or community activities
- Exhibition invitations, catalogues, posters or promotional material
- Personal correspondence, cards or signed material
- Newspaper articles or publications relating to Pro
- Art-making tools, studio items or objects associated with Pro
- Memorabilia, merchandise or other items connected to Pro and his artistic career
- Personal stories or memories of Pro that may help bring the exhibition to life.

We are particularly interested in items that have a connection to Broken Hill and the local community, including stories about Pro as an artist, innovator, neighbour, employer, mentor, friend or member of the community. The exhibition will look beyond Pro Hart's well-known artworks to explore the breadth of his practice and the remarkable relationship between Pro, Broken Hill and the Australian outback.

Items do not need to be of significant monetary value, sometimes the most meaningful stories are found in the objects that have been kept, treasured and passed down through families.

Haydn’s London | Australian Haydn Ensemble

This Saturday, the Broken Hill City Art Gallery welcomes the Australian Haydn Ensemble for Haydn’s London.

One of Australia’s foremost exponents of Classical-era music, the Australian Haydn Ensemble performs on period instruments, bringing audiences closer to the sound worlds the composers themselves knew.

Featuring works for String Quartet & Flute by Haydn and Beethoven, alongside music by Elena Kats-Chernin and Marin Marais, Haydn’s London traces the wonders of chamber music across more than two centuries – from birdsong and butterflies to moments of reflection and celebration.

Entries Now Open | 2026 Maari Ma Indigenous Art Awards

Presented by Broken Hill City Art Gallery in partnership with Maari Ma Health Aboriginal Corporation and West Darling Arts, the Awards celebrate and showcase the creativity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists living across the Maari Ma / West Darling Arts region.

Artists are invited to submit up to two works across a range of categories, with prizes recognising established, emerging and young artists.
