Currently on view at Creative Room Art Space, Reflections on the Infinite brings together Violetta Kurbanova’s atmospheric watercolours and paintings on silk, including works that explore the remarkable effects of pigment granulation.
In granulating watercolour, certain pigments settle unevenly as the paint dries, creating distinctive textures, patterns and variations in colour. In Violetta’s landscapes, these effects become part of the image itself. Fine networks of pigment suggest rock and earth, while softer passages dissolve into mist, water and distant terrain. The process retains an element of unpredictability, requiring a careful understanding of pigment, water and timing.
Her paintings on silk reveal a very different relationship with colour. Dye moves readily through the fibres, making control particularly demanding, while the smooth surface allows for exceptionally delicate transitions. In Violetta’s koi and floral works, colour seems to move through the image, producing the clarity, softness and luminosity characteristic of painting on silk.
The exhibition offers an opportunity to look closely at two very different approaches to painting, and at the technical knowledge and sensitivity to materials behind Violetta’s practice.
