There’s a quiet thought many of us in the diaspora carry…

“Is it too late for me to learn?”
Our answer: Never

Our culture is something we can continue learning at every stage of life.

For many of us, adulthood is the first time we’ve had the space, opportunity or confidence to ask the questions we’ve always wanted to ask — to move from simply seeing our culture to understanding it.

Our Aganuʻu classes were created with this in mind — a welcoming space to learn, ask questions, practise what you may have only ever watched, and understand the why behind our cultural practices.

This is what we learn in our Beginner’s Aganuʻu Programme. It’s never too late to deepen your connection to our aganuʻu.

You know you’re Sāmoan.
You’re proud to be Sāmoan.
But then you walk into a Sāmoan space… and suddenly you’re second-guessing everything.
Where do I sit?
Who do I greet first?
What am I supposed to say?
Was I meant to know that?
What if I get it wrong?
What if I embarrass myself?
So sometimes, you stay quiet. You watch. You follow everyone else and hope nobody notices you’re unsure.
For many of us raised away from Sāmoa, this feeling is more common than we realise.
Not knowing every protocol doesn’t mean you don’t belong. It may simply mean you haven’t had the opportunity or space to learn.
That’s why we created Le Fale Aganuʻu 🤎
A place where you can ask the questions you’ve always wanted to ask, understand the why behind our protocols, and grow in confidence in navigating Fa’a Sāmoa.
No expectation that you should already know.
Just a willingness to learn

✨️Learning Schedule✨️

With registrations opening tomorrow, Tues 11th Aug, here is an insight of what you will learn in our Beginner's Aganu'u 8 week Programme.

Our Programme is designed to be beginner friendly, and an introduction to some of our Sāmoan cultural protocols. The lessons are delivered 95% in english with all spoken Sāmoan translated.

Our programme is highly interactive and hands-on, with a strong focus on learning through participation and practical application. We combine guided learning with interactive activities and practical experiences that allow students to apply what they are learning in a safe and supportive environment.

While the Sāmoan language and elements of formal speech are naturally woven throughout our lessons, our programme is not intended to be a Sāmoan language or formal oratory (fa‘amatai) course. Our focus is on building a strong foundation in aganuʻu — understanding the values, protocols, roles and practices that shape the Sāmoan way of life, and creating opportunities for students to put that learning into practice.

No prior knowledge or experience is required — we welcome those who are simply wanting to learn, reconnect, strengthen their understanding or build confidence in their cultural journey.

✨️Folafola mea'ai/taumafataga✨️

In Sāmoa culture we acknowledge and honour those who bring gifts of food/prepare food by announcing what has been brought/provided. We call this folafola mea'ai/taumafataga.

We folafola mea'ai to honour, acknowledge and thank those who have provided and given food. Our culture is shaped and defined by alofa and fa'aaloalo. As evident in our gagana here; through the respectful words spoken to acknowledge, and the act of love of folafola mea'ai. We, as a people, are thankful and grateful for the love given, and in turn reciprocate that love by acknowledging with the utmost respect those who have given.
