‘The Doxa Series depicts the network of relationships among the body, landscape, and constantly shifting socio-political forces.

The settings for both paintings are depicted as landscapes: one set against the atmosphere of the southern coast of Java, and the other within the vast nature of the Mount Bromo landscape. The presence of the horse serves as a symbolic element of strength, solidity, and a close affinity with nature.’

‘In art history, still life was often used to display luxury: imported fruits, exotic objects, precious porcelain. All of these objects served as markers of social status. Thus, the title Avarice (greed) leads me to view the arrangement of objects in this painting as a tower of desire.’

One of Australia’s leading contemporary landscape artists, Idris Murphy returns to Mitchell Fine Art with a major exhibition featuring two significant bodies of work: a rare collection of unseen dioramas presented alongside a new series of paintings inspired by the Australian outback.

Bringing together three-dimensional works and expansive, luminous landscapes, ‘Incantation’ offers a unique insight into Murphy’s evolving practice and his enduring exploration of the emotional and spiritual experience of the Australian landscape.

Congratulations to Sophie Cape and Steve Lopes on their selection as finalists in the 2026 Kedumba Drawing Award showing at Kedumba Gallery, NSW.

The Kedumba Drawing Award is one of the longest running, and most prestigious, drawing prizes in Australia. Managed by the Kedumba Collection, it features a $20,000 acquisitive prize.

An exhibition of finalists will be exhibited from 22 August – 27 September 2026.

Sophie Cape is a Sydney based painter who creates her works by taking canvases into the landscape and working directly on the ground, exposing both herself and the artwork to the outside elements. Free from constraints, using unconventional mediums and reveling in their gross materiality, her works oscillate between abstraction and figuration.

Steve Lopes is a Sydney based painter and printmaker known for his figurative landscape. He often works en plein air, painting vignettes of a place which are used as references for large-scale studio works. While his landscapes are often a representation of what he saw, the figures are often imagined personalities, or placed into the composition after the fact.

“Indonesia has one of Southeast Asia’s most exciting contemporary art scenes, yet Australian audiences rarely have the opportunity to experience these artists firsthand,” says Gallery Director Mike Mitchell.

“Yogyakarta is widely regarded as Indonesia’s contemporary art capital, and after visiting studios we wanted to build a stronger cultural dialogue by introducing these remarkable artists to Brisbane audiences.”

Congratulations to Susie Choi on her selection as a finalist in the 2026 Fisher’s Ghost Art Award showing at Campbelltown Arts Centre, VIC.

Susie Choi is a Sydney-based contemporary artist who works across ceramics, sculpture and installation and is guided by ideas that confound and amuse her.

The sources of inspiration for her work stem mainly from childhood including toys and playgrounds, the material culture of South Korea, and elements of Australian popular culture.

Susie Choi graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art in Ceramics in 2021 from National Art School, Australia. She has exhibited in several group exhibitions in Sydney. Her work is held in public and private collections across Australia. 

The Fisher’s Ghost Art Award is an annual art award and exhibition inviting artists to submit works in a variety of artistic categories and mediums. Now in its 64th year, there is over $60,000 in prize money to be won across the categories.

An exhibition of finalists will be exhibited from 26 September - 4 December 2026, with the announcement of winners taking place on Friday, 30 October.
