SKETCH BEIJING POST - DAY 4 IN BEIJING 🎵 29/9
Concert Day at Minzu University!

Concert day finally arrived and we finally got to meet our Minzu friends for the first time! They performed stunning traditions music from the many different regions of China. They kindly let us workshop with their respective instruments with instruments such as the Erhu and Yangqin.

We performed Wanderlust by our amazing violinist Natalie and Bulgar Frailach! Additionally our saxophonist and pianist, Ayden and Jon played Jon’s stunning Saxophone Sonata. Lastly, we collaborated with the Minzu musicians to create new music for the Chinese silent film “Labourer’s Love”.

It was a day filled with oppurtunity and crazy day filled with music 🎶!

SKETCH BEIJING POST - DAY 3 IN BEIJING ☀️ 28/9
Yay! Exploration day!

A group of Sketch members visited the Great Wall of China for the first time. We had fun going up the chair lift walking along the wall. Thank you to Anshu for the stunning photos!

Some of the other Sketch members went to the XiDan shopping district where lots of money was spent. We loved exploring the bustling streets of fancy buildings and shops!

Lastly, we all went walking through the Beijing Garden Expo for the Beijing Opera Festival! There were so many incredible and talented performers and the gardens were beautiful and luscious.

What an amazing day 😍!

SKETCH BEIJING POST - DAY 2 IN BEIJING 🚢 28/9
It’s our first concert of the tour and we played Battleship Potemkin for the second time this year!

But first, we learnt the art of traditional Chinese calligraphy from Leo. We had so much fun learning about the brushwork and history behind calligraphy. Can anyone guess what Matt was writing on slide 3? 👀

We performed Battleship Potemkin alongside some Chinese guests to help fill in for some of our missing members. We are incredibly grateful for their support!

The concert may have been delayed but the seats were FILLED and we’re just grateful for such a supporting audience.

Looking forward to tomorrow!

SKETCH BEIJING POST - DAY 1 IN BEIJING 27/9 🎉
From Chinese cuisine to street markets, we explored what Beijing had to offer including the amazing Communication University of China campus!

Some of us had Peking Duck for lunch thanks to the help of Angela’s amazing family. We thank them for organising this absolutely delicious meal.

Our amazing guides and assistants - Sorry, Sherry, Emily, Li Yueran and many others took us around Beijing through the subway. We toured many amazing places including the Bell tower and Drum tower and it’s only Day 1!

Thank you CUC for the absolutely adorable pandas! Looking forward to more to come 🌠~~

We finally set out on our Beijing tour! We all flew to Beijing with a transfer at Guangzhou on China Southern Airlines! It was definitely a very tiring but also a very rewarding experience for us.

Happy birthday to Jackson who had to celebrate his birthday with a 9 hour and 3 hour flight 🥳🎉.

SKETCH LEAVES FOR BEIJING IN LESS THAN 24HRS!!!

🎬 September 28 | Communication University of China Centered on the theme of film music and live accompaniment, Sketch Ensemble will perform a live score for Sergei Eisenstein’s classic silent film *Battleship Potemkin* (1925), featuring original film scores composed by UQ artists.

🎼 September 29 | Central Conservatory of Music A special lecture titled ”Sounds Beyond Music.“ Exploring the relationships between sound, music, and culture—and incorporating live performances and interactive elements by Sketch Ensemble—the session will discuss how we listen to, understand, and create music.

🎶 September 30 | Minzu University of China A special lecture titled ”Listening and Resonating: Difference, Translation, and Creativity in Cross-Cultural Musical Practice,“ followed by a showcase of original music by young composers from China and Australia. In addition to performing original works and mutual arrangements, students from both countries will collaborate to compose and perform a live score for *Laborer‘s Love* (1922)—the earliest surviving complete Chinese feature film.

From Brisbane to Beijing: a journey spanning from classroom composition to collaboration across languages, cultures, and musical traditions. This tour is about more than just performing works in Beijing; it is about young musicians from diverse backgrounds coming together to compose, revise, rehearse, and perform. An Australian breeze meets the Beijing autumn—see you there. 🍁
