Artistry is one of those words that gets thrown around a lot in the dance world. But what does it actually mean? 💛

At Evolution, we define it like this: artistry is what happens when a dancer stops executing movement and starts communicating something.

It is the moment a performance shifts from impressive to felt.

It is personality. It is the way a dancer fills the space between the counts. It is emotional truth in a two-minute routine. It is performing as if the last person in the back row matters — because they do.

This season we are giving it an award of its own.

The Evolution Artistry Award is open to all solo performers — $15 per entry, scored separately from your section score. Every Novice and Open winner receives a $50 prize made up of $25 cash and $25 EVO Dollars.

Because the dancer who moves the room deserves to be recognised.

Cairns meet your judge!

Carly is a seasoned professional dancer, choreographer and director who has literally travelled the world doing what she loves. Her performance credits include working alongside Beyoncé, Kylie Minogue, Kelly Rowland, Ke$ha, RuPaul, Tina Arena and musical theatre legend Kristen Chenoweth. She has appeared on XFactor Australia, Australian Idol, America’s Got Talent, Australia’s Next Top Model and in the film Happy Feet. During her time in Los Angeles she worked as assistant choreographer on multiple projects alongside leading choreographers Tovaris Wilson and Andre Fuentes.

Back in Australia, Carly has taught at some of the country’s most prestigious studios and has judged extensively across the US, Australia, Asia and New Zealand — including the Sydney Eisteddfod and NZ Dance Awards.

Here is something every dancer needs to hear before they step on stage this season.

What happens when something goes wrong mid-performance is not a reflection of your ability. How you respond to it absolutely is.

The dancers who stand out to adjudicators are not always the ones who perform without error. They are the ones who make a choice, commit to it, and keep performing, because the show is still happening and the audience is still watching.

A stumble recovered with presence is more impressive than a clean routine delivered without risk.

Bring this into your next rehearsal. Write it on the whiteboard. Send it to every dancer heading into competition season.

Let’s talk about one of the most valuable parts of your Evolution entry — the video critique. 🎬

Every solo, duo, trio and group at Evolution receives professional video feedback from our adjudicators. Not just a number on a sheet — an actual recorded critique they can watch back, take notes from, and bring straight into their next rehearsal.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

Your dancer performs. The adjudicator records their critique in real time — what they noticed, what stood out, what to work on. That recording is then available to you after the event.

It’s the kind of feedback that used to be reserved for private coaching sessions. At Evolution, it’s included with every entry.

This is development, not just competition.

Nine days. Hundreds of performers. Dancers from across Southeast Asia stepping onto a world-class stage and giving absolutely everything they had.

The talent, the dedication, and the warmth in that room across the whole event was something we will not forget in a hurry.
