A month in the box means mixing only means not much to take photos of:

A: someone said to me recently why don’t have you a skarbass and I was prejudiced to the concept because I thought they were implying I was deeply into Reel Big Fish. This pedal absolutely rules, gentle compression that controls sound before an amplifier that doesn’t sound like a machine is in the way.

B: Jonny Greenwood lite, been making its way onto more records lately

C: finished recapping the motherboard of our 2 track. Give it a month or so I’m hoping before we are printing to it again.

Big rig high gain jita session. Faithful M160s providing driver source and room. People always ask about the placement of the ambient microphone/s, I do this so that it is only receiving reflection and no direct sound, there are multiple ways around this and it routinely blends in a nicer way. It can sometimes not sound as natural. The SE mic is coupled with the providing a little bit of top and bottom if needed whilst the 421 captures mids, kind of a mark opitz thing. N22 the most consequential and faithful of all coupled with a 57 that was used because somebody told me to. Also the is always at home on speakers cabs, one of my favourite microphones.

Pro tip sometimes (often a time) compression kills the sound of a piano, even in parallel, and even the fanciest of gas cooker kn**ed units.. I’ve found that what can routinely help even out the sound is to put a cardioid microphone as close as possible to the sound board and blend that in. To me it sounds more natural and closer to what the human ear does when it does its own kind of compression.

Thanks for having us, full Talking Zeds interview at link in bio. Stirring up lots of memories of 2010’s Brisbane DIY community (forever) and talking about learning from Steve Albini, touring south east Asia and running a recording facility, oh and also some consequential songs in all that!

A good 15 years making records with , not much has changed about our working methods save for the piles of gear being added to the process. Currently (strangely) obsessed with this C12 capturing the resonance of this bass drum, of which for this sorta music there is hardly any, but it’s still important. Also NT6’s as the best cymbal spot microphone I have found thus far. For this kinda insanity, a pr30 still wins the shootout for snare drum close miking and for a short room sound our AEAR88mkii is still the most consequential sound. Oh and SE mics for overheads almost always.

Plug ins that plug in! Always a fun day when someone breaks out an optical spring. Been seeing more of the echo fix units around lately, but it’s nice to mess with the classics.
