🎵 Meet Aylish Ryan!

Hailing from Toowoomba, mezzo-soprano Aylish Ryan is the recipient of the prestigious Opera Australia Regional Vocal Scholarship, the Victoria Chalmers Education Award, the Elizabeth Muir Memorial Award and the Sir Mostyn Hanger Opera Prize. She has been an artist in the Lisa Gasteen National Opera Program and joined the OQ Young Artist Program in 2025.

Composed in 1736 during the final weeks of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's tragically brief life, the Stabat Mater stands as one of the most profound sacred works of the 18th century.

Pergolesi draws from the Stabat Mater, 'The Sorrowful Mother,' a Catholic hymn written five hundred years earlier. The hymn is to the Virgin Mary and portrays her grief as she stands at the foot of the Cross, watching Christ die.

Pergolesi's Stabat Mater has gone on to influence many composers, including Bach, Haydn, and Poulenc, and is frequently performed around the world during the Lenten season.
