Ok so. Imagine being commissioned to illustrate an artwork destined for the most iconic landmark in Australia (maybe even the WORLD), then being able to share this creation with a global audience in the MILLIONS, all to celebrate the 50th birthday of *APPLE* …. and it’s just a little story about a suburban backyard in Brisbane, watching the bats fly overhead in the afternoon. 

I am absolutely speechless, thank you so much for this incredible opportunity to share my art with you all, and celebrate the beauty found in our subtropical corner of the world. 

My artwork, ‘A Brisbane Story’ shares a fantastical twist on the very real, gloriously mundane beauty found in Queensland life; how lucky we are to so casually cohabitate with exotic native wildlife every single day in an urban sprawl like Brisbane. Sometimes visible, sometimes hidden in plain sight, our neighbours and housemates so often meet us in the form of possums, snakes, water dragons, lorikeets, bats, curlews, frogs, you name it.

It is the sheer average-ness of this experience that is so magical and makes our home so special. 

Our beautiful state of Queensland is home to *more than half* of Australia’s total biodiversity of native species. The natural world is omnipresent in our built environments; crawling into our kitchens, growing through the bathroom windows, escaping the heat on our verandahs. So many Australians (not just Queenslanders!) intimately recognise this lil tableau; taking a break on the balcony and noticing a green tree frog or shiny critter sheltering nearby, a little companion with whom you share the porch light in the afternoon.

I want to extend my sincere thanks to the amazing and the inimitable for making last night possible. Endless love to the other artists involved in this project, it was such a thrill to share this week with you all. I’ll be carrying this glow forever!

And of course, happy 50th ! 🥳
