“Interval explores painting as an arrangement of relationships rather than a fixed image. Each work begins as part of a single composition before being divided into separate parts. The grid does not restore what once existed; instead, it generates new possibilities. Fragments that were once joined acquire a new autonomy, forming unexpected relationships in the spaces between them.”

Congratulations Karla Marchesi🥂🤍

Gold rush: Berlin-based artist scoops Rocky prize
Karla Marchesi’s colourful floral painting style has just won her Queensland’s richest painting prize.

“It is hard to comprehend the impact a major prize can have on an artist. Karla Marchesi, Brisbane-born and now living and working in Berlin, has just won the state’s richest painting prize – the $50,000 Gold Award – for her hyper-colourful and visually decadent paintings.

It was not just the financial boost that resonated so strongly for this artist, but the validation it provided for her painting practice.”

“Fracture sits at the centre of this character, whether through the forces of time, chemical transformation, or the expansion and contraction of base in opposition to filmic skin”. - Andrew Browne

Join us tomorrow, Saturday July 4th to celebrate the opening of ‘Till and Toil’

We will be having drinks with the artist (Karla Marchesi) from 2 - 4 🥂

Till and Toil invites viewers into a vegetal patch where seeds have been sown in a state of agitation, caught between old and new, hope and despair. In a condition of ambiguity, with messages not yet fully deciphered, garden time requires slow listening and an acknowledgement of the season one inhabits.
This exhibition presents a range of forms: tangled botanical arrangements, precarious stacks, indoor and outdoor plants growing under strained conditions, and the figure. Together, they form not a fixed statement but a record of things in the process of becoming.

“The central painting, Stagecraft (Interior with Plant, Reflection Listening), 2026, together with companion works Undercover and Tip-toe Garden Time, directly references Lucian Freud’s Interior with Plant, Reflection Listening (Self-Portrait) (1967–68). Freud’s painting delicately observes a singular houseplant, rendered with the same dignity and attentiveness he brought to his n**e portraiture. Rather than treating the plant as a symbolic device, Freud attends to its presence as an object in itself. A partial rendering of his n**e body cups an ear towards the plant, listening to its quiet everydayness.

In Stagecraft, a similarly partial n**e self-portrait is obscured behind a tangled botanical mass. Vegetation bursts forth within a self-consciously staged interior, complete with a pinned bedsheet backdrop and looming disaster on the distant horizon. The figure reflects and listens with a calm resignation, acknowledging conditions that cannot be entirely controlled. The act of listening becomes less an exercise in observation than one of endurance”. - Karla Marchesi
