Toowong Heart and Hands Fair! Some QTOD members were involved in Toowong State School’s Auslan production of Wizard of Oz.
It was popular with both parents and children. Even more amazing - Deaf children were also involved acting on the stage!

School plays are a wonderful way to incorporate Deaf culture and Deaf-way in storytelling.

June - We QTOD had fun putting on a comedy sketch for music interpreting weekend! Thank you for inviting us!

One of the biggest mottos from us: “give it a go and learn something new.”

For many of the cast it was their first time putting together a comedy slapstick and we had a lot of fun which is an important part of the process!

From us, the directors: thank you from the bottom of our hearts. It’s been a dream of ours to bring this back for the Deaf community: a creative space where we can all thrive, express ourselves fully in Auslan, and be immersed in Auslan-first theatre. This is what we can have, and this is what we will push for in the future.

Our journey started way back when we were teenagers in high school studying drama yet always feeling like the odd one out in plays that were designed for hearing audiences. We weren’t alone; many of us wished for a Deaf theatre where our voices, in Auslan, could shine.

One of the biggest pushes to make this dream a reality was attending the Clin o Dell Festival in Reims in 2024. Seeing an international platform brimming with performing arts while Australia had so little was a huge kick in the butt for us. It reminded us of our immense potential as a Deaf community to elevate not just our local scene, but our international profile as well.

Thank you for being part of this journey together, we’re making our dreams a reality. 💫❤️🎭

Before us, there were many. ✨🎉
This year marks 50 years since Queensland Theatre of the Deaf was first established in 1975.
We honour the incredible Deaf elders, creatives, and community members who laid the foundation for where we are today.
From a small group with big dreams to a legacy that continues — thank you.
