THIS IS A PLAY ABOUT ROMANCE. THE NEW ROMANTICS AND THE OLD ROMANTICS.
***The Old Romantics – Keats, Shelley & Byron – who is a significant but off-stage character in the play. Empire line dresses and Beau Brummel effete men. 1809 is the time of Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, Bridgerton, Napoleon. And yes, we have a similar Mr Darcy scene where he bears the flesh that inspired a generation to swoon.
***The New Romantics – Spandau Ballet, a Flock of Seagulls. The English Country Garden. The English Don. Oxbridge, Academic Research and Romance. Brideshead Revisited and a touch of Saltburn. Surviving Thatcherism. All “True” and styled in 80s couture aka Vivienne Westwood.

“SEX AND LITERATURE, LITERATURE AND SEX”.
ARCADIA is recognised as one of the 20th century’s greatest plays – many argue it is Stoppard’s master work - a cocktail of ravishing comedy, literary sleuthing, romantic entanglement and scientific discovery.

“The play is both a comedy and a tragedy. Whilst the incredible wit of Stoppard’s text tantalises the audience’s tastebuds, the tragic core of the play, drives the action forward. It is at the same time, infinitely complex and wonderfully simple. That is what makes ARCADIA such a rare and wonderful piece of literature. It is like looking into the night sky deep in the middle of the country and being awestruck by the divinity that is The Milky Way. It seems simple but we know it is indefatigably complex. It invites us to explore who we are, why we are, how we are and what we are becoming. It engages us with our reason for being. And does it in the most wonderfully beautiful way.” (Michael Beh, Director)

In a stately home in the British countryside, poets, tutors, academics and lovers roam the corridors two centuries apart, each uncovering their own particular mystery. In April 1809, bright young Thomasina and her tutor Septimus Hodge are inventing chaos theory a century too early – or perhaps they are simply falling in love before one of them burns to death? Almost Two hundred years later, two scholars, Hannah and Bernard, try to piece history together from the puzzling fragments that remain. Along the way, there will be indiscrete affairs, mistaken identities, hermits, duels and … horticulture.

ARCADIA by acclaimed British playwright, Tom Stoppard.
Directed and Designed by Michael Beh.

“Et in Arcadia Ego” - And I am in Paradise.
FALL IN LOVE WITH THE WIT, INTELLIGENCE, CHAOS AND ROMANCE OF IT ALL.
The Centenary Theatre production of ARCADIA is a significant Queensland Revival. It is lush, gorgeous, hilarious and compelling. It has only been staged here once before, by the Queensland Theatre Company at its premiere season, in the early 90s. So this production is a long time coming and falls in line with the current revival in London, that started early this year at the Old Vic and recently transferred to the newly named Tom Stoppard Theatre in the West End.
