The Jazz Singers' Jam Night (JSJN) is based in Brisbane, Australia and is a event held on the first Thursday of every month (7pm to 10pm) hosted by The Brisbane Jazz Club. In 2021, it is celebrating it’s 20th anniversary. JSJN has provided a welcoming space for singers of all levels - from emerging jazz vocalists to professionals to perform with an accompanying jazz trio in front of a supportive

Jazz Singers’ Jam Night Celebrates 25 Years on 6th August 2026

The Jazz Singers’ Jam Night (JSJN) has grown into a cherished institution, connecting generations of singers and musicians across a quarter of a century. It was created by Ingrid to nurture and promote jazz singing by providing performance opportunities for both emerging and established vocalists.
The monthly gathering has also become an important meeting place for vocalists and instrumentalists, fostering collaborations, friendships and creative projects that continue to enrich the jazz landscape.

This months artists include DAVE SPICER with InVoices, GUADA ALVAREZ, STU FISHER, LIAM WALDOCK, CINDY DONATO, DAVE SPICER, Presentation to INGRID JAMES by Trina Massey Councillor for the Gabba and Dr. Barbara O’Shea MP South Brisbane, PEARLY BLACK, STEPH DICK, INVOICES (JARYN OLIPHANT, MIA HUNT, MILLIE MILNE, MOLLY QUANT, OLIVER RADCLIFFE, RILEY DUCIE AND ROWAN FARRUGIA) and a group song "STRAIGHTEN UP AND FLY RIGHT".

Special thanks to Mark Smith who kept everyone miked up like he has since 2009, and also to Brennan Finighan and Mary Wilson from Clear Image Events who managed to take all these photos in between videoing the entire event!

Update: We have been asked about a funeral for Miles Foggon. A small private funeral with Miles’ lifelong family friends and godchildren will be held. Sadly for his BJC friends who wanted to say goodbye, it is a closed service. We have decided to celebrate Miles at our September JSJN, which is hosted by his long term teacher Naomi Doessel, who will sing two of his favourite songs to honour him. It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of a stalwart of the jam night and BJC community, Miles Foggon. Miles was a dedicated amateur who had a great passion for jazz singing and looked forward to every jam. With 12 performances under his belt, Miles was always saying his next performance would be his “best yet”, and he did work hard to improve over the years, bringing a childlike enthusiasm to the endeavour. Whilst Miles recognised that he was a novice, he never lost his motivation for learning, attending almost every vocal workshop available, as well as weekly singing lessons for most of the last seven years.

During Covid, Miles generously contributed to topping up musicians’ performance fees by way of a substantial donation to the Brisbane Jazz Club. Like many, for Miles, singing was therapy and social connection, which makes the Jazz Singers’ Jam Night and other community activities such an important contribution to people’s lives at any age. He made friends at the jazz club, and always delighted in bringing his friends along to hear him sing.

Miles was widowed ten years ago and embarked on his solo singing journey at the age of 69. His weekly lessons with Naomi Doessel served a purpose beyond learning to sing jazz, as they were his most regular connection with another human who paid him good attention, for 90 minutes a week. For those who were fond of Miles, please know this community gave him a lot of sustenance, as we all pulled together to help him feel a sense of achievement and provided connection and community which he lacked after his wife died.

As I write this, I feel a great sense of loss, as my first lesson with Miles was seven years ago tomorrow, and he has been a regular part of my life ever since. Teaching Miles required a lot of patience; however, he brought so much joy as well. He was a passionate consumer of vocal jazz, and would often bring me lists of songs he’d heard to see if they were “in his voice range”, and he expanded my personal knowledge of jazz repertoire significantly, bringing hundreds of songs over the years. Sometimes he would “let his enthusiasm get the better of him” and I would have to pull him down to earth, but I regularly saw the little boy that had been told he couldn’t sing, and been denied the pleasure of singing, for decades. That little boy was happiest when he was singing, and the joy he brought to the retired man “kept him young”.

Miles’ health had been declining over the last year, but his loss was sudden. He was looking forward to his September performance at the jam, and was actively working on the songs he wanted to sing. Miles died peacefully at home, which is what he wanted, as he hated hospitals. With this salient reminder of our fragility and mortality, I am grateful that the meaning of my work with him went far beyond the sum of twelve performances at a community jam night. I learned a lot from teaching him, and I will miss him dearly.

It is with deep sadness that we have lost a special singer from our beautiful community this week. SUE BOND, who lived on the Sunshine Coast - a consummate singer/performer who spent some time in the last few years making the trip down to Brisbane to sing at the Jazz Singers Jam Nights. Sue and I met many decades ago. We were both session singers at Byrne and Ross Studios in Fortitude Valley. So glad we got to do some fun gigs together in the past few years. They were very memorable.
Sue spent her last hours with her beautiful daughter, Lara, and sister.
Her celebration of life will be held next week at 11am on Wednesday 29th July - Buderim Memorial Gardens.

From its early days at the Travelodge Jazz & Blues Bar & later at Maggie Black’s Jazz Club, the event eventually found its spiritual home at the Brisbane Jazz Club in 2009. Held on the first Thursday of every month, the JSJN continues to attract enthusiastic performers and regularly packed audiences, a testament to its enduring popularity and community support.
Our special 25th Anniversary Celebration features inVoices, the premier vocal ensemble of the Queensland Conservatorium– comprising Jaryn Oliphant, Mia Hunt, Millie Milne, Molly Quant, Oliver Radcliffe, Riley Ducie and Rowan Farrugia, under the direction of Dave Spicer (piano/voice), with Samuel Vincent (bass) and Paul Hudson (drums).
Joining the celebration will also be special guest vocalists Pearly Black (Gold Coast), Cindy Donato, Liam Waldock, Stu Fisher, Penny Connolly-Coates, Guada Alvarez, Dave Spicer, Steph Dick & more...
Hosted by founder, Ingrid James, this evening honours not only 25 years of outstanding jazz performance, mentorship and community building, but also a legacy that continues to inspire future generations of jazz singers. In an era when many arts programs come and go, the JSJN's stand as a rare and enduring success story–25 years of performance, mentorship, collaboration and community, with the music still going strong. Jazz Singers' Jam Night ~ Thursday 4th June, 2026
Last night was the first Jam back in the Jazz Club and some interesting variety from the 11 singers, and a couple of horn players joining in on the last two numbers. The house band was the guitar based Paul Henderson Trio with Samuel Vincent and Stephen Fischer on the kit.
The singers in order were Heather Fitzpatrick, Pam Hodgson, Sunny Vicars, Jane Michele from the Sunny Coast, Moseara Kinharbourr, Naomi Doessel, Host Ingrid James, Guada Alvarez, Sara Louise from Toowoomba, Penny See-See and Michael Barber with Nathan Parker on tenor sax, followed by an ‘all-in’ jam with Harry Hales on tenor...
As usual the next jam is on the first Thursday of July: this time with the John Reeves Trio.
