An accomplished cast brings Patricia Cornelius’ play about dementia, dying and doomed explorers to life at Queensland Theatre Company, but textual density obscures emotional depth.

Finely honed performances and a stirring score squeeze bursts of deep emotion from this dense work about looking toward, or looking forward to, the end of our lives.

Second Coming, co-produced by Playlab Theatre and La Boite Theatre, is a contemplation of humanity’s near future, but so thematically crowded that it loses touch with the play’s human heart. This world premiere about a Mars mission in 2065 is weighed down by its own admirable ambition and the result, despite well-crafted design and strong actor performances, is ultimately a directionless scream into the void of space.

Queensland Theatre Company's raucous Regency romp takes another turn about the room at QPAC, blending Austen’s 19th-century commentary on love, class and marriage with modern music and movement. This Pride & Prejudice may not appeal to Austen purists but it's an exuberant production, cleverly staged and laugh-out-loud funny.

Opera Queensland’s La Cenerentola was a delight to revisit, blooming again at QPAC last month with magnificent costumes, excellent comedic timing, and astonishing voices. Camerata - Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra shakes things up with Revolution Remixed, a program packed with bold ideas and big emotion.

At the centre is Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 Eroica, a work that rewrote the rules of orchestral music and still feels powerful, dramatic and modern. In striking contrast is Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, in chamber arrangement by Australian composer Julian Yu. Inspired by an art exhibition, these musical vignettes transform sketches into soundscapes that sparkle with connection and curiosity.
