We love our Honey Bear so, so much! 🍯 🐻 We adopted her almost 2 years ago from the wonderful . Her shelter name was Blair, which we didn’t feel quite captured her full personality. renamed her Honey which became Honey Blair, which became Honey Bear. She loves treeing squirrels and watching TV and sometimes her black coat turns chocolate brown in the right lighting. She also loves being pushed in shopping carts, shaking hands for treats, and swimming. Thank you Nashville Humane for helping so many pets find homes.

Cover design for Brain Magazine Japan with the theme, Creative Addiction and a little Q&A. Thanks so much and Brain Magazine! ❤️

Q1. What is the idea for this cover and how did you make it?

My idea in response to Creative Addiction was to depict a bona fide addiction using my love of colors and prints. I made it by using a tablet and Adobe Illustrator. I am very inspired by colors and always start every project by creating a color pallet first.

Q2. What made you come up with the idea?

I like to write down key words after receiving a brief. I use those keywords to write another list with a more stream-of-conscious format. I think of different symbols for the words and then different ways to creatively tie them together. The word “addiction” reminded me of a book, “Valley of the Dolls” I read a long time ago where the main characters were addicted to pills. I like the graphic quality and bright colors of pills and wanted to use them as visual objects to mix colors and patterns.

Q3. What do you think of Japanese advertisement and design?

I love Japanese design. I adore the bright, flat colors of Ikko Tanaka’s posters with their unapologetic shapes. I am very inspired by the asymmetrical compositions and quality of Ikebana. I am always drawn to Issey Miyake’s and Rei Kawakubo’s courageous silhouettes. I think Kintsugi is a good lesson against perfectionism.

🌿 THE OLIVE TREE has deep historical and cultural roots in Palestine, and its branches have been associated with peace and prosperity for centuries.

Olive trees can handle drought, subzero temperatures, frost, even fire, and is prominently found in Palestinian art and literature as symbols of steadfastness amid a life of displacement.

🍉Grown from Jenin to Gaza, THE WATERMELON — which matches the colors on the Palestinian flag — has symbolized unity for over half a century.

The history of the watermelon as a symbol of Palestinian solidarity dates back to the Six-Day War in 1967, when Israel captured Gaza and the West Bank and banned any displays of the Palestine flag in the occupied territories.

🔑 THE KEY is a widely used symbol of the Nakba (“catastrophe” in Arabic), as many Palestinians kept the keys to their homes when they were forced into exile in 1948, sure they would return.

Almost 75 years later the key remains a potent symbol and reminder of physical and emotional loss and injustice.

Poster 1 of 2 for our Panhandle Throwback Fest reunion. We worked closely with the Nashville illustrator Lauren Rolwing (Warby Parker, Nike, etc.) to illuminate our history with several specific details. See if you can spot them all.

In no specific order:

— A News Herald feature on us from 1999/2000

— Embraced appearances in the film Anger Management, at Club La Vela and the legendary Cornerstone Festival, in Illinois

— Javalooyah. Our starting point, home base, you name it. Bay County's underground scene in those days doesn't get off the ground without Rob Woodrum's venue and support.

— Miracle Strip, which Embraced never played (did bands play there?) but whose devilish icons provided the perfect backdrop growing up in a beach town

— Two tour vehicles. Our first, the mighty Suburban "Bessie." Our third or fourth (can't recall), a conversion van we flipped in Kansas on tour with Underoath and Love is Red. If we're honest, that wreck might've spelled the end of Embraced. So let that image simmer.

Both posters will be on sale Saturday in limited quantities.

🇫🇮 Finland has been named the world’s happiest country for 6 consecutive years. This summer, they are hosting a Masterclass in finding this happiness by discovering your inner Finn.

Even though I was born in the southern United States, I’ve always leaned towards the cold, evident in the childhood picture of me happily wearing a snowsuit and boots daydreaming of a blizzard but firmly grounded in 100F heat of the south. Nowadays, when I’m not drawing, you can find me barefoot or hanging out in my ridiculous pop-up sauna drinking coffee.

A good friend (thank you Sarah Starpoli) gave me some of the best advice I’ve ever received… She suggested I pause more, which is hard for me. Please be my pause, Finland!
