The rain didn't dampen our spirits last night - we had another fantastic rehearsal! We spent time playing with percussion🥁, working on a few songs, and talking about what a standard chorus year looks like for us - ready for some planning and goal-setting next week. 💭📝

A highlight of the night was splitting into quartets and quintets - we love small-group singing opportunities! 🌟 🎶This gave our wonderful new members (pictured) a chance to try out some of the repertoire they've been working on at home. It was a good opportunity for the rest of us to refresh those songs too!

It's Pride Month! This is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community to society, and to promote a culture of diversity and inclusion.

The origins of Pride Month can be traced back to the Stonewall riots in New York City in June 1969, which were sparked by a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in Greenwich Village. The raid led to a series of protests and demonstrations by members of the LGBTQIA+ community, who were tired of being targeted and discriminated against by law enforcement and society more broadly. The riots marked a turning point in the LGBTQIA+ rights movement, and inspired similar movements and protests around the world.

In Australia, Pride Month has been celebrated since the 1970s, with the first official event being the Sydney Gay and Le***an Mardi Gras in 1978. This started as a planned protest on “International Gay Solidarity Day” on 24 June. It was a march of solidarity on the ninth anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Since then, Pride Month has grown to include a wide range of events and celebrations across the country, including parades, parties, cultural festivals, and community gatherings.

It was illegal to be gay in some parts of Australia even as late as 1997. Same-sex marriage was only legalised in 2017, and there is still plenty of discrimination in our society, despite the progress that has been made.

At Blue Sky Harmony, we are inclusive and celebrate diversity - this is one of our Guiding Principles. Our chorus is a safe space where everyone's identity matters. Happy Pride! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️💙🎶

Music brings people together, and our harmony is strongest when everyone is seen, valued and celebrated.

It's our birthday! Seven years ago, our founding members met to create our vision. We were excited to establish a vibrant, collaborative, creative, member-driven chorus that was keen to learn and evolve, and open to new ways of doing things. A chorus that was connected to our local community, our friends across the country in Sweet Adelines Australia, and also the global organisation.

We feel that we have achieved all this and more over the past 7 years! We've shared amazing experiences together - coaching, retreats, workshops, concerts, community performances, conventions, quartet events, social gatherings and more.

We've built connections in the barbershop world and our local community. We've welcomed members who have stayed with us since day one, or just for a season of their lives. All of them have helped shape who we are today!

This is our awesome Management Team! Back in April, we held our Annual General Meeting and Financial Manager Rowan and Membership Coordinator Kate were appointed for another 2-year term. This means that our team is unchanged, providing great continuity for our chorus!

Kate and Rowan join Secretary Bev, Team Coordinator Michelle and Musical Director Julie on this team. Along with support team members, this group ensures that we have a place to rehearse and the equipment we need, organises gigs/coaching/workshops, looks after members, markets the chorus, and ensures that our we operate in line with our rules and annual budget.

They do so much work behind the scenes so that we can focus on what we love - singing, learning and connecting! Thanks, team!

Searching for something fun to do for yourself? We couldn't recommend a ca****la singing highly enough! It's fulfilling, great for confidence and wellbeing, and a way to build connections in the community.

Creating harmonies with like-minded singers is the best hobby. And sometimes you get to sing on stage in a room with 600+ singers from across Australia. 🎉

Some more happy snaps from our recent wedding performance! An absolute highlight was when the bride and groom started dancing to the music we were creating. Some of us may have been a little emotional, but we made it through! 💙

To top off this wonderful memory, we were thrilled to receive a lovely message from the bride, ending with "We will never forget how special that performance was".

It was incredibly special for us too! 🥂

Although our chorus didn't head to convention this year, Blue Sky Harmony was represented by our Musical Director, Julie, and members Michelle F and Michelle N. They had a busy trip, starting with the Michelles performing with SEQuence Quartet at the Quartet Open Mic Night on Wednesday night. Thursday involved a tech briefing for Michelle N and Julie for the webcast, plus mic testing and Quartet Chorus rehearsal for both Michelles.

Friday morning saw Julie directing 'Weather With You' at the mass sing outside in the glorious sunshine. Then SEQuence kicked off the Quartet Competition with their mic-testing performance - a great effort after only nine rehearsals! 👏

Michelle N then co-hosted the webcast for session 2 of the quartet competition, before joining Michelle F in the Quartet Chorus performance at the end of the contest. In the evening, all three Blue Skyers were excited to sit in on the Endeavour Harmony Chorus and Brindabella Chorus rehearsals before bed!

On Saturday, Julie co-hosted the webcast for session 1 of the chorus competition, before enjoying the rest of the show! Finally, Michelle N had the honour of presenting the second-place midsize chorus medals 🥈 to Hobart Harmony Chorus.

Saturday night was jam-packed, with the Parade of Champions (show featuring all medallists), followed by a glow-themed party! Much dancing ensued 💃🏽

On Sunday, our crew attended education classes before some chill time at the waterfront. 🥂🦪 They finished off the weekend at the Sunday Sesh, with socialising, games and a bit of singing!

We're thoroughly looking forward to attending the Region 34 convention next year in Newcastle, with a whole bunch of first-timers! 🎉

Last night we finally had a chance to officially welcome our newest member, Preveena! Preveena has joined the lead section, after first visiting us at our February Open Rehearsal, then taking part in our New Year Singing Workshop. We have seen her dedication and enthusiasm already, and can't wait to get to know her better 💙 🌟🎵
