My friend Lorin Nicholson (Lorin Nicholson) invited me to create this piece for FSY (For the Strength of Youth), a Christian youth conference.

As I began creating, one question stayed with me:

What would I say to my younger self?

The answer became this dance.

Be still. Listen. Choose to follow.

Ballet has taught me that true freedom isn’t found without discipline. The more faithfully you return to the fundamentals, the more freely you’re able to move. I’ve found the same to be true in my spiritual life.

The final moments draw on the Native American Hoop Dance my dad, Polynesian Cultural Performer, taught my brothers and me as children. He taught us that each hoop represents a challenge, and that every challenge we overcome leaves us stronger than before.

I hope, wherever you are in your journey, there’s something here that speaks to you. 🫶🏽

A Garment (Armor) that tells a story of my brothers and I. A part of my heritage comes from “the land of the long white cloud“ a.k.a. Aotearoa a.k.a. New Zealand and Viti a.k.a. Fiji. Inspired this piece. A collaboration between artists. I curated the project, my brother Sam Mangakahia Sam Mangakahia | Cultural Designer designed the Māori and Fijian inspired designs and the construction and embroidery by the beautifully talented BELINDA PIERIS. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the love of my life Kirstie Mangakahia , you have been there for me when I needed you most , you fiercely love those close to you , you are the most beautiful woman and I know one day you’re going to be an incredible mother to our children , I’m amazed at your strength. You think you haven’t been able to handle things but I have seen you grow and it’s remarkable the strength you have developed through the challenges we’ve faced together - thank you for choosing me to be the one to spend Sunday afternoons with I love you .
