It is with great sadness that Brisbane Arts Theatre shares the passing of our dear friend and longtime member, Eugene Hickey.
Eugene was a cherished part of the Brisbane Arts Theatre family from the early 1970s, dedicating decades of his life to our community both on and off the stage. As a performer, he appeared in many productions, including When We Are Married and Chase Me Comrade, bringing warmth, enthusiasm and a wonderful sense of character to every role he undertook.
Eugene also made a lasting contribution to children's theatre, writing and directing numerous productions that delighted generations of young audiences, including The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Peter and the Wolf, Peter Rabbit, and Kedar the Kangaroo Boy.
In recognition of his extraordinary service, Eugene was awarded Life Membership in 2005. Even as his health declined, he remained connected to the theatre he loved, attending AGMs and special functions whenever he could.
A gifted storyteller and great yarn-spinner, Eugene loved sharing memories and tales in vivid detail. His exuberance, passion and infectious enthusiasm enriched every rehearsal room, performance and conversation. He will be remembered for his happy, cheerful disposition and the joy he brought to those around him.
Eugene is survived by his beloved wife Sabina, his children and grandchildren, all of whom are in our thoughts during this difficult time.
On behalf of everyone at Brisbane Arts Theatre, we extend our deepest condolences to Eugene's family and friends. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the many stories he helped bring to life.
Rest peacefully, Eugene. You will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. ❤️🎭
