🌲 What's In The Woods? Returns To Brisbane! 🌲

Brisbane's favourite Theatre For Babies, Infants and Toddlers experience returns to where it all began at in June and July!

Join Leaf the gnome for some very special storytelling around the campfire, marvelling in each season's natural wonders, before exploring the woods yourself in a sensory adventure tailor made for children aged 0-3.

✨ 🎻 Ellis & The Night Orchestra 🎻 🌙

This week the Backbone Theatre For Babies Tiny Stages series welcomes "Ellis & The Night Orchestra", a new chamber opera for 0-5 year olds from writer-director Julie Ritchey and composer/performer Tim Munro, featuring musicians of Southern Cross Soloists.

Ellis is too scared to sleep. Each time he lays down to close his eyes, he hears strange sounds.

Is it a monster....or an airplane flying overhead? A creaky floor, or a ghost? They seem to be in the room with him. As the night goes on, Ellis befriends the sounds, becoming the conductor of his very own Night Orchestra and transforming his fears into beautiful music.

This playful and heartfelt journey will resonate with anyone who has struggled with bedtime.

This afternoon our production of 'What's In The Woods?' reached another exciting milestone - 250 performances!

A big congratulations to all of those that have been involved in making this come to pass, from our onstage and Backbone Theatre For Babies Team, to venue staff across Australia who make the show possible for communities far beyond our Brisbane base.

We can't wait to bring even more performances of this delightful show to families all over the country in 2026 and beyond!

What's In The Woods? is the inaugural production of the Backbone Theatre For Babies program. Tailor made for children aged 0-3 and filled with performance puppetry and play, What's In The Woods? is a gentle welcome to the world of theatre.

🎨 Bébé ARTISTE returns! 🖌️

Following a fantastic first appearance in March we are delighted to be bringing Bébé ARTISTE back to for the new 'Tiny Stages' series as part of the Backbone Theatre For Babies program on Saturday May 23rd, 2026.

Through clowning, mime, and playful interaction, a bumbling artist sets out to create a masterpiece from nothing. Children are invited to engage, respond, and make their mark as the performance unfolds, becoming part of the creative process. Our masterpiece will be created in real time, shaped by play, curiosity, and the audience themselves - a joyful, collective act of creativity.

Untamed and expressive, Bébé Artiste is a real-life demonstration of “my kid could have done that” and proof that they absolutely can.

Backbone Theatre for Babies presents the Tiny Stages Series; a curated line-up of performances especially for babies and their grown-ups.

Welcoming exceptional theatre makers from across Queensland, the series brings together artists who have developed work for young audiences on stages around the world. Blending movement, theatre and live music, each performance invites babies into a brand new, rich sensory world designed for curiosity, connection and gentle discovery.

True to the Backbone Theatre for Babies philosophy, performances take place in a relaxed and welcoming environment where babies are free to respond in their own way. Our venue is a safe sensory space where nothing a baby does will interrupt the performer.

🖼️ We Made Masterpieces! 🖼️

An incredibly special day today as we welcomed our very first audiences to come experience 'bébé ARTISTE', and what a joy it was to see so many children aged 0-3 (along with some older siblings!) and their families creating together.

There were squiggles, and crayons, and paintbrushes, and paper flew everywhere! Little hands and feet were traced, and colourful lines became brand new artworks, with a change in perspective and a little imagination. Soon our empty exhibition (and our bumbling Artist's heart) was full to the brim!

Always one of our favourite posts to make, here are the posters for our upcoming performances of 'bébé ARTISTE' at next week!

Did you know this isn't the first time we've referenced Michelangelo's 'The Creation Of Adam'? Back in an original workshop of ARTISTE our bumbling artist was leant a very familiar hand in a parody of this painting before the show went in a different direction.
